Sad to see TATH go. Always had fuzzy feelings for the that artwork. I remember sitting by my radio listening to the album premier interview with Gord and hearing him talk about that photo (which I believe Rob had found) and the other photo inside the album of the lightning striking the horizon. I remember he said that photo was titled "Traveler's Omen." Both by a guy named Avery Crounse.
This round it's IBE for me. Very cool artwork, indeed, but I have the least emotional attachment to it of the remaining bunch.
(Aside, it would be cool to see a list of the album covers and who the artist was for each. For the remainder, I know FC was commissioned for the album -- and includes some of their input (and photocopied faces), DFN -- I'm not sure, PP is a photo of a piece of equipment Johnny found, IVL is Rob Baker original, and IBE is an original by Kingston artist Cameron Tomsett.)

TATH was top two for me. I wonder which came first, the title or the cover? I'm assuming the latter...and I kind of love the idea that they liked the picture so much that they chose the album title based on it.

TATH has great artwork, but the packaging was awful. I originally went through 2 copies of the CD because the disc would get scratched all to hell from taking it out of the cardboard sleeve all the time. I was overjoyed when they eventually released those enhanced versions that came in the old fashioned jewel case, which is the version I still own (along with the recent vinyl reissue).
That being said, I appreciate that they were trying to be environmentally conscious at the time.

IVL is good art, but it's really just a pretty picture between two black bars. Day for night does a much better job of framing the image.

I can't look at the IVL cover without singing to myself: "There's a heron outside, in violet light." Gets bonus points for that.

The foreground of the original DFN painting was nicely cropped for the cover. To answer Moof’s question, DFN was a painting purchased by Rob Baker from Kingston based artist Simon Andrew. I don’t know if the original title of the painting was actually DFN.

I agree that attachment plays a role in this. I spend a lot of time studying Hip album covers, packaging and liner notes in the 1990’s. I had the FC one out so much that I could scarcely get it folded back into the jewel case from being so worn and frayed. Anything after M@W I would have looked at on the day I bought the album but probably not much after that.
One nice aspect of the vinyl resurgence is the increased appreciation for album art.

Haha, this happened to me often. Thankfully the Hip upgraded their eco-friendly packaging with subsequent releases. I was delighted when PP and M@W actually had a proper CD tray attached to the cardboard.

Pretty sure used stores stopped taking them because either the case was too frayed or the CD had too many scratches. I had (at least) 3 copies at various times. Probably needed a bit more workshopping in the design phase.

Then you may also love the idea of IBE for the same reason. It is the title of Cameron Tomsett's painting.
