I like 'What Blue,' but it's another one that I feel is somewhat overrated by Hip-heads. A pleasant minor pop song, would be my basic take. Not sad to see it get this far, but no way does it beat the other two in my book.

What Blue for my vote as well. A solid song, I really like it. But I love the other 2!

I love "What Blue," but I think the lyrics for "Possessed" are some Gord's best and for that reason it's deserving of the final round.

"What Blue" is another interesting latter-day Downie love song. His thoughts on love are often suffused with cynicism in the love bites/love stinks/love hurts and, of course, love is a curse, tradition. At times he seems to give himself over to the idea of love, such as when he sings "I love you, you know I do, Yeah, it's perfect" on 'In View'. Yet one line later realism kicks in and he pulls back on those sappy sentiments, stating "Well, it isn't and it is". That seems to be the case on "What Blue" as well. Musically it sounds cheerful and lines like "I love you so much, it distorts my life" lend to that feeling. However, he is seemingly discontent to simply celebrate love (which is tough to do without cliche). He darkens the mood of the song by adding in "useless nights, dreary places, unease, dark doors and disenchanted paths". Classic Downie, where nothing is straightforward.

Good notes potsie. I saw an interview with GD one time where he said sentiment is a dangerous thing for a songwriter, and his cautiousness is pretty evident.

Mueller's team is looking into it. Seems there might be some Russian interference to account for these two outlier votes. Either that or someone got a really early start on their Friday drinking and clicked the wrong box.

'What Blue' sounds like a personal song. Downie is on record as stating that the song 'Man Machine Poem' is about his wife and in that song he references the "blue" of her eyes, singing "Your eyes Empty Pacifics". In 'What Blue' he takes that image of the beauty of 'Pacific" blue further and fuses it with the "Eyes are the windows to the soul" metaphor in examining a (his?) relationship: "In your eyes, what our love looks like". It's a great song, but it's not 'In a World' or 'Machine' great.

I absolutely love the lyric that love is "the longest thing that we do." It's a beautiful ode to commitment.
But still, What Blue isn't as strong as Possessed or Machine.

I think What Blue is a gorgeous song and I’ve thought that since day one.
To me, it could be the best song on this album.
With Machine being the other contender.
I’m happy with this final three. It seems right on to me (unlike In Between Evolution).
