Road Trip! - mrlayance - 02-25-2004

Looks like Lynette and I are moving to Winnipeg.

We are going to drive it, we can take more stuff with us and it is cheaper.

I was wondering if any one has driven hwy 17 in Ontario?

What is it like this time of year? Would anyone recommend driving through the states? From Sault Ste. Marie?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

We are thinking

Day 1 - Halifax -> Montreal - 1233km
Day 2 - Montreal -> Sault Ste. Marie - 979.9 km
Day 3 - Sault Ste. Marie -> Winnipeg - 1379 km (staying in Canada)
- 1283 km (US highway)

Can't say I've ever taken that highway. Why have you decided to move out to Winnipeg? Is it beacuse you'll get to see more hip shows when they do a Western Canada tour!!! That'd be my reason to move! :-)

I've never driven anywhere east of Hull Quebec really but I have driven from Calgary to London, On. When we hit Winnipeg we went South into the states and came back up into Canada through Sarnia. This was easily the quickest rout from Winnipeg to London and the roads were pretty good.

My fiencee has driven home from London in Canada and she recommends the US if you're looking for a shorter route. If you're looking for siteseeing then the Canadian route is nice. Of course she did this in the summer so road work was a big issue.

Those are some pretty ambitious distances to cover each day!

I've driven most of 7 and 17 between Montreal and Sault Ste. Marie and it's a beautiful drive at many points, but it can also be treacherous.

I'd suggest that you take the 401 from Montreal to Toronto, and then head north, or continue down the 401 to Windsor/Detroit and go through the States.

Getting stuck behind a big rig, or a snowplow on 7 or 17 would really kill any chance of making the trip as fast as planned.

What is it you'll be doing?

Good luck with the move. Whether summer or winter, I imagine there'll be lots to see in Western/Northern ON. I don't know how tight a schedule you'll have but I'd make an extra day to go out of my way every now and then and check out something scenic. I've seen so many beautiful, rugged pictures from up that way...it'd be worth it!

If you are gonna go up 17 outta North Bay I highly recommend that you do it in the early or mid day. Nights and evenings have been deadly up here on that highway. 4 casualties in the last month. I don't want to sound grim but if you do drive between NB and the Soo at night take it way easy.

In addition to the safety concerns, I recommend driving it during the day because it is a spectacular drive...
When I drove from Toronto to Banff I figured that all of the scenic driving would be out west...... and I was pleasantly suprised with the beauty of Northwestern Ontario (esp nippigon)

As well as taking it easy be sure you get gas in Sudbury or just after because after that there is practically nothing besides a few well placed timmies which do come in handy :thumb:
