Streets Ahead, I'm sorry, but you're just too darn loud.

This is tough. I don't hate any song on this album and there's a lot of middling tracks. I guess I'll vote for The Modern Spirit because I skipped it when it came up yesterday on random, even though it's a tune that for some reason my 11-year-old loves.
I agree Streets Ahead is too loud, but it seems like it should survive the first round.

For an album that I don't love profusely, this first round is harder than I thought it would be. I tend to place WATS above NFPA due to the great trio of Morning Moon, Recluse, and Depression, but my trigger finger was primed and ready for Exact Feeling, Struggle, Queen of the Furrows and Speed River. I don't have any great issue with any of the songs on NFPA. Sure, many (most?) aren't standouts, but there aren't any dead-obvious duds. I have to take something from the second half of the album so I'm going with Modern Spirit as well.

Lol, love it. :thumb:
I voted Modern Spirit for this round, but Streets Ahead is next on my chopping block for round 2.

Me exactly.

Bit of a toss-up between Modern Spirit and Done and Done, but I went with the latter. Neither are bad songs, but not standout tracks either; as others have mentioned, there isn't a lot on this album to hate, it's more middle of the road compared to WATS, and I'm curious to see how the weakest link pans out for it.

I've read the dislike for Modern Spirit in a few threads lately but didn't think it would be this bad. I've been in the majority with most on previous albums but not here. Modern Spirit is in my top 3 on this album. Oh well can't win'em all

I predict 'At Transformation' will win unfortunately. I think 'We Want To Be It' or 'Now For Plan A' could give it a run for its money though.

Yeah. My bet is that AT and GA are the last two. But those four -- including NFPA and WWTBI -- are the strongest on the album.

Wow the Modern Spirit is by far my favourite song on this album. Just goes to show how wildly tastes differ. I voted for Take Forever.

What? 4 fer Take Forever?? I love that song. Yet another example of a brilliant little rock song that should have been a radio hit but gets no love.

I used to be indifferent to this song. A year after NFPA's release, I would think, "How does that one go again?" I disliked Streets Ahead...but at least I
knew it. It left some impression. Take Forever grew on me though. I mean, what's not to like about the opening verse:
"Whenever a man, whenever a man
Tries to be more like a machine
He breaks down, when I broke down
I always thought I'd go to Calgary"

My only complaint is the production sounds a little thin. The song feels small. Perhaps mixed differently it would have more oomph. In the wake of the news about Gord's illness, I put every last Hip album into a big playlist and played it on shuffle and repeat and listened to it all summer long. Whenever this song came on it always sounded much thinner than the songs that played before and after. A damn good song that sounds weaker/thinner than it should.

Done and done for me.
Looking at the lyrics now, it's hard not to relate it to his relationship with his wife, and so it's a song I just don't really want to listen to. Who knows if that was what this was really about, but I can't really suppress that interpretation any more.
