2018 Junos - direwolf74 - 03-25-2018

I usually avoid the Junos like the plague, but I'll be tuning in tonight just to see Gord's tribute with Sarah Harmer and Dallas Green.

Introduce Yerself won for best adult alternative album, and Gord won songwriter of the year (along with Kevin Drew) at the non-televised ceremony last night. Also sounds like there will be more Gord solo releases in the near future.

Quote:Gord Downie, the late Tragically Hip frontman, won adult alternative album of the year posthumously and also shared songwriter of the year with Kevin Drew. His brothers, Patrick and Mike, accepted the award, advocating for more attention on Indigenous rights and issues facing the population.

"I can feel it, this country is changing," said Mike Downie. "And it's changing for the better."

They also told media backstage that there's "stuff still to come" from Gord Downie's musical offerings.

"There's a lot of material that he was doing all along, a lot of material he created after he found out he was going to die and there's a lot of archival material," said Pat Downie.

Hopefully the "stark" record made with Dale Morningstar (as mentioned in the book) and the "rail derailment" concept album with Bob Rock were close enough to completion to release as future solo albums.

I never miss the Junos, and was especially looking forward to them this year with performances by Arcade Fire, The Arkells, the Barenaked Ladies reunion, and of course the Downie tribute. I somehow ended up forgetting about them tonight, and missed everything prior to the BNL HOF induction. At least I still got to see the majority of the acts I listed, but missed the Gord tribute. I’m sure I’ll be able to find it online soon though.

Both Sarah and Dallas gave an amazing performance tonight.

Many will be hardpressed to keep it together during the Gord Downie tribute. The performance by Sarah Harmer, City and Colour and Kevin Hearn was exactly what an In Memorium performance should be. It was punctuated by a video curated by Tim Thompson, best known for the years of videos he put together for Hockey Night In Canada (and who may actually be lurking around these parts).

I actually can't remember the last time the Junos were this enjoyable to watch. The Jessie Reyez/Daniel Caesar performance was stunning.

I agree, it was a wonderful tribute to Gord. Dallas and Sarah were both fantastic.

It was also cool seeing the original Barenaked Ladies lineup. Would be great to see those guys fully reunite and make another record together.

It was stunningly moving, not a dry spot on my face.

I agree, the entire show was great this year. Understated, great performances by everyone, over and done in just over 2 hours.

I'm so pleased one of Gord's solo songs was covered. Sarah Harmer did a fantastic job and nailed it. Watching her sing it reminded me of the uniqueness of Gord's phrasing ("We... were both... sit-TING... in the... back-SEAT"), something I don't often think about when I hear Gord, but tend to notice more when others cover his songs.

The video montage playing behind Dallas Green did a beautiful job of capturing Gord's idiosyncratic stage presence.

Can't think of a more appropriate artist than Sarah Harmer to pay tribute. So good. Tim Thompson's video, which highlighted Gord's mischievous on-stage antics, was the perfect complement to the heaviness of the moment. I can trace my own obsession with Gord to his performances in Heksenketel (ARA '93) -- you know, the shaggy-hair, the beard, the deranged mad-genius-who-just-escaped-from-an-institution look while ranting on stage. Epitome of cool. Seems like yesterday I was a teenager in my parent's basement watching that VHS tape on a loop, entranced by those rants. Collectively, they did an excellent job with this tribute.

^^ Was thinking the same thing when they showed the Wild-Man Gord clips -- the Heksenketel Gord; the werewolf, baby; parents' basement; VHS; laminar flow; landscapes emerge -- 100% same

Sarah's Introduce Yerself was great. They should have let her do both verses. Dallas Green's Bobcaygeon was a little high-pitched for my taste, but I thought all told it was a very well done tribute.

Sarah was fantastic. I'm on record saying I can't stand c&c's cover of bobcaygeon, but it didn't seem too awful last night, given the context

That describes my adolescence perfectly, except I go back a little further to the Live at the Misty Moon concert, which I taped off Muchmusic and watched obsessively until Heksenketel came out, and then I became obsessed with that one. No doubt many fans will remember Gord for the Jaws t-shirt, the shiny suits, and the hat. But for me, the shaggy hair and crazy Grizzly Adams beard look from ARA '93 is just as iconic.
