The Weakest Link - In Violet Light Champion - The Dire Wolf - gsmacleod - 01-18-2018

The Dark Canuck was able to slide under the wire to edge out Good Life. With that, on to the championship round!

Listened to Dark Canuck on my way home last night to be sure ... the first 3 minutes sets the stage for the greatest 3 minutes of the Hip's 00s catalogue. Dire Wolf is amazing, but doesn't make we want to have three more kids and name them Gambier, Aspen, and Tuloolah.

There's been a couple others albums that have surprised me a bit, but this one surprises me the most.

I don't really disagree with the final three, but I guess I hold so much personal regard for IAGLIYDW, it truly shocked me that it didn't walk away with this.

There is just something about the vibe and feel to Good Life that gets to me. Plus, any time I have seen it live, Gord just seems to add so much more punch and soul to the lyrics that I just think its an outstanding track, easily in my top five.

This is a beautiful choice, because there's no loser, IMO. They're both amazing, my 2 faves on the album, my fave one-two punch in their discography. I really wish I knew more abt how these songs came to be--if I could ask the boys only one question, that would probably be it--discuss these 2 songs & how you made them.

One of the toughest choices yet.

Dire Wolf is magnificent, albeit with some strained writing in places. The first half of the Dark Canuck is middling at best, and exemplies the whole record's sonic flaws. But that second part is one of my favourite things they ever did. So what do you do as a voter? Focus wholly in the second half? In that case DC wins. Take the track as a single thing, and therefore only haldf a masterpiece? In that case DW wins, because it's a coherent unity.
