Anyone else kinda sad to see that, as the M@W voting wraps up, we'll be over half way through the catalog.....
I kinda worry about the forum slowly fading away, but hopefully we can keep the topics flowing.

I almost started a new topic on Edible Paper today (the song/poem from The Right Whale) ... maybe I'll get that going. When are we doing Weakest Link for The Right Whale. Spoiler Alert: Cooking in Wartime wins.

I agree, it would be a shame for this forum to disappear. However I'm quite certain there will be more upcoming releases from the Hip in the form of live material, b-sides/unreleased stuff, box sets, DVDs/blurays, merch, etc... not to mention the inevitable biographies, memoirs, and documentaries that will be made about these guys in the future. We already have the Michael Barclay book scheduled for release early next year. Sure it's unauthorized, but let's be honest here, we're all gonna buy it anyway. I know I will.
So don't worry, folks. I imagine we'll still have plenty of things to talk about in Hip world for a while yet.

There is a scene in LTR where Gord talks about settling down in front of a fire at night with his pen, paper and all the tools of his craft in place. He is talking about his "music at work". Sure, there are some simplistic rhymes (work/jerk) but there are also some great lines like "In a sink full of ganges, I remain". This captures the overall sentiment of the song, which is the struggle to create/write something worthwhile. Being immersed in the waters of one of the most polluted rivers in the world, the Ganges, is him wallowing in the filth of unworthy work. He lays out his rules for song writing ("Avoid trends and cliches, Don't try to be up to date") and shows the effort it takes ("Night so long it hurts") to hang in there for that moment of inspiration ("When the sunlight gets the olive oil").
I'm not ready to let go of My Music at Work just yet.

Totally agree. And a line like 'everything is bleak/it's the middle of the night/yer all alone and the dummies might be right' is pointedly, wryly true. This 'simplistic rhyme' charge irks me - good writing is not about weighing fancy words by the pound, although every once in a while Gord (and his fans) fall into this thinking. In fact, my least favourite aspects of this song are the obscure referents (OLGA waits, yeesh); the 'jerk' rhyme is just fine by me, because it makes sense, it dishes the simple truth. It's a great, catchy, anthemic track - one of the only ones on that album that efforlessy grabs the ear. Excellent popular music that stands with the Hip's classic hits. I also enjoy what Gord did with the coda live, imitating iconic singing voices.
EDIT: I voted TO #4. The reason is that the 'rock plug' is such an ugly metaphor (and such an ugly phrase), it's up there with 'we can skip to the coital fury' as an absolute lyrical clunker. Fortunately the last half of the song cashes out the metaphor in a beautiful, vertiginous way. Nonetheless, it's half a great song, not a whole one.
