Weakest Link Option - chagrinfalls - 12-09-2017

I am kinda loving the body of ideas we're accumulating about the Hip's work in these Weakest Link posts, & I'm wondering whether people would consider adding 'Coke Machine Glow' into the timeline of albums we discuss. I know it's not Hip per se, but I just think it comes at a really specific & important time in Gord's writing/performing career/life, & would love to hear what people have to say about how it does or doesn't fit in the Hip's trajectory, & especially Gord's songwriting trajectory etc.

Yays? Nays? Thoughts?

100% in favour.

In favour. Would it be too much to run in in parallel with IVL? (I ask mostly because of how much enjoyment I am getting out of this)

I'm in favour of doing Battle of the Nudes, The Grand Bounce, and The Conquering Sun as well.

Not sure about the two most recent yet...

Do it! Do it!

Nah, I saw we go all the way and do them all.

Re: Weakest Link Option - Escape@Hand - 12-09-2017

I'm more inclined not too, just because this is about The Tragically Hip, and not Gord Downie. Obviously he plays a huge role in the band, but musically speaking, his solo albums are quite different than the bands. I don't think they belong in the timeline of the band, per se, and I don't think they add much to the conversation of the band as a whole. If we are talking about Gord only, then sure, but as The Tragically Hip, I feel those albums fall outside of that purview. Are we going to include Stripper Union's albums, and Paul's as well?

Hopefully I'm not coming off as a jerk, and I can understand why people would want to do this, but I find sometimes so much attention is put on Gord, and not as much on the band as a whole. I honestly listen to them for the music first, and some times don't pay a whole lot of attention to the words (although I can sing along to almost every song they've released when I hear it); to me they are so great not because of Gord, but because of the whole. Clearly Gord is an all-time great lyricist - I'm not trying to diminish that fact - but I listen to The Tragically Hip for The Tragically Hip, not for Gord...if that makes any sense.

And while I'm ranting...what's with news articles/magazines not capitalizing the word "The" in the band's name anymore. They are "The Tragically Hip", not "Tragically Hip". AAARRGGGHHH :nooooo

Re: Weakest Link Option - Killer Whale Tank - 12-10-2017

I'd prefer that we do all the Hip records, then move on to Hip solo projects. Best of all worlds.

Re: Weakest Link Option - loach - 12-10-2017

I'd like to go through the Hip records before veering into solo territory, and then I'd be up for additional polls like an album weakest link, eliminating one Hip album at a time. Or, maybe take all the first round exit songs from these polls and do a weakest link among those.

Re: Weakest Link Option - cochise - 12-11-2017

I think we should stick to just Hip, to me it just seems a tad disrespectful to the rest of the guys compiling Gords solo efforts with the band releases.

We have a solo discussion forum, once this is done we can do a solo album weakest for all solos released.

I like this idea. :thumb:
