Add one song to Yer Favourites - tbroomhe - 11-16-2017

As someone who's a bit of a perfectionist (and likely has a bit of OCD), it's bothered me that Disc One of Yer Favourites has 1 new song + 17 favourites, while Disc Two has 1 new song + 18 favourites.

Add 1 song to Disc One so there's 19 songs on each disc.

I know this is an extremely difficult task. I've narrowed it down to about 5 or 6, but I think I have to go with "Putting Down". From the lyrics, I suspect this is where Gord's interest in the plight of Canada's indigenous was piqued.

Anyway, simple rules, pick one song to add to Disc One. You don't have to worry about time limitations to fit the song in, just pick one. Any song, any album, from The Tragically Hip through In Between Evolution.

Putting Down... interesting choice! Gord did make a more oblique reference to the plight of the Indigenous a few years earlier with his take on European colonialism in "Looking for a Place to Happen". I've always taken "indigenous" in the first verse of Putting Down to be a generic reference to the local townspeople that he's met on the road. Like "Bring it All Back", "Machine", and others, I think this is Gord "writing about writing". Putting Down could be taken literally as recording in the form of "paint and sketch", as he sings in the song, or is possibly a more metaphorical reference to song writing and in particular writing about the people and stories he hears about while on the road. The "documented indigenous civilization" in the third verse could certainly be a reference to Canada's Indigenous, but I've never interpreted it that way. As I look again at the lyrics, I'm not really sure what he's getting at in that verse. But I digress...

My choices are less interesting than yours. Yer Favourites would have been that much sweeter to me with the inclusion of either "Opiated", "Pigeon Camera", "Thugs", "Emperor Penguin", or "Tiger the Lion". If I had to pick one of those five it would be "Opiated".

Runner up is harder to decide for me but maybe If New Orleans is Beat.

I take Putting Down a bit more literally...he's bored with touring, so there's other things that are starting to interest him like painting, sketching, and through the windows of the tourbus, he's noticing the problems that Canada's Indigenous people are facing.

And I'm starting to fail to know what's best.

Kicked down (browbeaten), the people tried a rebellion (flipped it's desk metaphor), and were removed from their land (you know the rest), but he doesn't know how to help (starting to fail to know what's best).

My 1A contender was Springtime In Vienna.

Others were Thugs, Flamenco, 700 Foot Ceiling, Thompson Girl, Emperor Penguin, and The Dire Wolf
