Okay, so I've been listening to the 'Music at Work' album kinda non-stop, & one of the things I realized as I listened to 'the Bear' for the zillionth time is that Gord kinda has bears on the brain. I mean, from early on in his writing career he's carried on conversations with & about bears. Which I was reminded of again as I looked at the image above painted by Loretta Gould. She explains the image: "Downie and Wenjack are performing a smudging ceremony with spirit animals formed out of the smoke and ground to represent the seven sacred teachings of the Mi’kmaw." ONE OF THOSE SPIRIT ANIMALS IS CLEARLY A BEAR. So I looked up what the bear represents in the Seven Sacred teachings, & I kid you not, this is exactly what it says:
"The Bear: COURAGE
Courage is the ability to face danger, fear or changes with confidence and bravery.
The Bear represents courage because of strength and natural ability to overcome challenges. A mother bear, for example, will stand against a much larger, stronger male bear or other threat to protect her cubs.
Just as the Bear hibernates during the winter and reawakens each spring, we too, need rest and rejuvenation. The Bear shows us how to live a balanced life, where there is a time to be playful and a time to be assertive and courageous.
Native people believe that the Bear calls them to awaken the potential within themselves and to stand up for what they believe in."
What do you call that thing where the superficial surface of the world draws back to reveal the deeper hidden connections that have been there for..well, in this case decades I guess. Gord has been singing about bears for decades.
