'Daredevil' works as a sort of art rock song, but I always felt it lacked a really compelling melody and has no discernable hook. Somewhat overrated. It gets my vote. But given that somehow 'Terrarium' lost last round, it'll probably stick around after 'Scared' has been thrown overboard :rambo:

As surprised as I was to see Titanic Terrarium twice live (in '13 and '15), I was much more surprised to see it exit in Round 2.

Just one more illustration of the flaws of democracy!

Who's that counting in at the start of Daredevil? Gord S?

I went with Thugs but this was easily my toughest poll choice so far. What joker voted Grace, Too? Ban plz.

I miss Titanic Terrarium already! It's too bad the Hip retired the banjo after DFN. I would have liked to have seen them explore its use on an upbeat tune, in the vein of Travis' "Sing" or Big Wreck's "Ladylike".

As for Daredevil, there was an interesting interpretation of these lyrics that I remember reading last year around the time of the Kingston show. The writer surmises that the song metaphorically describes the life of a performer:

"For me, it’s “Daredevil,” what you might call a “deep cut” from their 1995 album Day For Night. Superficially, it’s about those foolhardy show offs of a bygone era, who sought fame and attention by braving Niagara Falls in a barrel. Metaphorically, it’s about the life of a musician. Downie’s perspective changes throughout the song. He is the gawking audience wondering about the sense of the daredevil:

Do you like it inside a barrel, Plunging over the falls? Curious and grim, We wrestle at the rim, We wonder all about him, And the point of it all

And then he is the daredevil, equally perplexed by the fear that keeps his onlookers on dry land:

What I’m going through is essentially all true, Made no less amazing, By the fact that it’s see-through … And the real wonder of the world is that we don’t jump too.

Downie is saying to the audience “if you could see what I see from this stage, you’d be up here, too.” It’s an acknowledgement of what a privilege it is to have that stage and to have an audience, but also an uncommonly gracious gesture of empathy to that audience, to say “this is amazing and you could have it, too.” All it takes is the nerve to do it. Whether we accepted that challenge or not, Gord Downie has taken us on that ride. It’s easy and conventional for fans to have empathy for the artist. That’s what being a fan is. It’s a little more rare for the artist who achieves a certain level of fame and status to look out and still recognize themselves in the crowd. In every sense of the phrase, that’s where The Tragically Hip lived, too.
(excerpted from: http://nodepression.com/article/tragica ... between-us)

I don't think it fits perfectly but it's an interesting interpretation nonetheless.

I'm sad to see Daredevil go.

It's in my top 5 fav Hip songs of all time.

Who plays that banjo on TT? I agree that it would have been nice to hear that element now and then in future work.

I always assumed that the mumbly singing at the start of Daredevil was Gord D. What's he saying, anyway?

Good that So Hard Done By made it this far, but then again that's another seemingly underrated cut. Great sound, some of Downie's sharpest couplets. (One thing that recently occured to me is that the guitar chords sound like a transposition of the bass line on 'Fully Completely,' just slowed down). A tip of the hat here for another superb track going by the wayside; I rate it much more highly than 'Thugs' - much as I do like that one, it seems weirdly untouched in this poll.

Don't quite understand why 'Daredevil' would be in anyone's top 5, myself. What's wrong with melodies and choruses? (By contrast, 'Inevitability' has a tremendously fun chorus). I do like the 'plague is exhumed' line quite a lot, however!

I voted Yawning or Snarling and I don't want to play anymore.

That is definitely GD, and I too would like to know what he's saying.

But if you turn it up, at the 5s mark you can hear a different voice count in (1...2, 1, 2, 3, 4). That's what I was asking about. I don't recognize that voice...best guess is GS?

My Thugs vote seems to be the only one so far...

Re Daredevil mumble intro, I always singalong as "I'm always ... plague is exhumed ..."

You people that voted for inevitability of death are bad and you should feel bad.

Huh, I always heard "It's not always big as it seems", figured he was talking about the falls.

Be that as it may, "the plague is exhumed" is a great line :thumb:
