BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - There's another mural on Hertel Avenue to feast your eyes on.
The new mural honors The Tragically Hip's singer Gord Downie, with one of the band's famous lines painted beside him -- "No dress rehearsal, this is our life."
You can see the work of art at the Hertel Liquor Library on 1669 Hertel Avenue.
Rory Allen of Zoom said, "I wanted to create a tribute to Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip considering Buffalo's special affection for him, his unfortunate health diagnosis, and the beautiful artist that he is."

It's amazing how iconic that hat and GD's overall '2016 tour' look has become. After 30 years of being a band, they suddenly have a defining image. It's instantly recognizable to everyone in the country and, maybe, beyond.

All those years I've wanted to dress up as Gordie for Halloween... but how the hell do you do that pre-2016? Everyone would have just said it was a lazy costume, or that I wasn't dressed up at all.
Now, there's outfits that are instantly recognizable.

Vert true. Every tour Gord basically did have a new "look", but it was never really a "stand out" look like the MMP tour, only fans that went to every tour would truly notice. We can all see a photo from a concert and say "that was from tour blank" just from what Gord is wearing, but that's just because we're us
I always liked even the smallest change he would make, like during the 06' "Summer Fling Tour" Gord was in all white cotton with the white Castro hat, then when the full "World Container Tour" started, he went all black with the black Castro hat.
He always changed, but definitely nothing as flamboyant and iconic as the MMP tour.

I suspect that if Gord had dressed all along with the crazy conceptual flair that he showed in 2016, the Hip would have been more beloved by critics - many of whom pay as much attention to an artist's image and "concept" as they do to music. It certainly would have been harder to dismiss the band as just a bunch of off-the-shelf hosers rewarded by a frat boy fan base for dropping Canadian referents into their songs. Just a thought.

I've always thought Gord was an amazing dresser--a kind of natty, slightly dandified Mark-Twain-meets-I-Come-From-Downtown thing he's got going on. He has singlehandedly kept vest-makers in business, lol. Every once in a while I think about starting a thread dedicated to documenting his outfits for each show or tour, but it might be a niche interest... :wink:

The early 1990's were a bit of a lost period in terms of Gord's fashion sense. Some of the ARA stage outfits were awful:
He recovered in later years, even after stumbling through his Star Wars phase... The Empire Strikes Back is clearly a better movie!

When Gordie walked out on stage in Charlottetown 2008, I remember thinking to myself 'That handsome motherfucker'

That suit & shirt combo, lol. This is the Dark Canuck come to life, a kind of lowkey high art Canadian renaissance man. I love that he seems to take pleasure in every aspect of his person that he can apply his creativity to. (I'm assuming he doesn't have someone buying for him, assuming he finds most of his own clothes). I think the mix he wears has a lot to do with a desire to express his more rural roots & that aesthetic, as well as his urban life now.
