The Weakest Link - Road Apples - Round 3 - gsmacleod - 09-19-2017
Things are about to get extremely tough in Round 3; On the Verge was the clear choice for the weakest remaining song in Round 2 with Gems and The Luxury also securing enough votes to get the axe.
Eliminated in Round 1:

Eliminated in Round 2:
On the Verge
The Last of the Unplucked Gems
The Luxury
Again, choose the song you think is the weakest on the album from those remaining. After 48 hours, the two songs with the most votes will be eliminated and we'll do round four.

Surprisingly, I think this was easier than the last round; I love the riff for Twist my Arm and really like the song. However, compared to the other five, IMO there is no contest as to which is the weakest.

Sorry to see "The Luxury" go. Always loved the line "...sucking hulls of ships". I'm not sure what it means but I envision barnacles latching ("sucking") on to boats with this line being a metaphor for someone who is a "passenger" in life, and not a "driver"; someone who has not taken charge of their own destiny. I think this fits with the overall portrait of the song narrator. Anyways, great tune.
Shane, I agree that having "Twist My Arm" still left makes this not an overly difficult vote. It's an "A", the rest are "A+". Next round will be a different story.

The Luxury is one of the best songs on the record and should not have been cut IMHO.
I agree that Twist My Arm is the obvious candidate in this round. It's a classic, but as a composition it never should have beat out Luxury in the first place.

Luxury is just awesome; some fantastic writing and I was sad to see it go.

Voted Twist and probably would have voted it over The Luxury as well. Pretty sure Little Bones is next on my chopping block...which is crazy, but the opening riff on Three Pistols is what's saving it for me. Thinking LTR and Fiddler are my two favourite songs on this album.

My view is, when you're talking about choosing between terrific tracks, the decider has to be the songwriting. But obviously not everyone feels the same way, as evidenced by the fact that 'Blow' came close to unseating NOIS.

I agree that the qualitative level of songwriting is a reasonable deciding factor. It has been for me all along when two songs have been close... except for NOIS vs. Blow. I voted for Blow based on physiology. It just gets my heart beating a little faster and sends a little more adrenaline into the blood stream than NOIS. I couldn't discount the hard-to-define aspect of how a song makes you feel during that vote.

TMA is taking a beating, but does the 2-2 tie between Three Pistols and Fiddler's Green mean that both of those songs are going down as well??

Man, I would rank both Cordelia and Long Time Running behind those two. The former is a fine song - they all are, FFS - but I believe is somewhat overrated among Hip fans because of Gord's reluctance to sing it live, which turns it into this withheld goodie, this semi-lost masterpiece and object of fan fetish out of proportion with its actual merits. 'Pistols,' meanwhile, merely combines the Shakespearean references of 'Cordelia' with fabulous Canadiana ('Tom Thomson came paddlin' past' - one of the most iconic opening lines in Canadian rock), a great pre-chorus ('Rennaisance...I been shaking all night long...') and an epic chorus that includes a countdown as it develops ('three...two...one') - all this PLUS Downie's most demented recorded vocal AND a final verse that marks some of the filthiest, insane guitar crunching in their discography. How the crap that loses to 'Cordelia' beats me!!
'Long Time Running,' meanwhile, is a classic ballad, a beautiful song - but I don't see it as surpassing the sheer beauty and great imagery of 'Fiddler's Green,' which might be the first time that the Hip achieve something closer to the region of art rather than excellent rock and roll.
'Little Bones' is a hard one to asses just because it's so iconic as one of their all-time great, defining singles. I'd put it ahead of 'Cordelia' anyway, but how it stands up to 'Three Pistols' and 'Fiddler's Green' is another question. Looks like we won't have to make that choice...sigh
