Band Biography - Arriving Early 2018 - Rocker_Matt - 08-14-2017

Written by Michael Barclay. Honestly, if anyone is going to be writing about the band, Barclay is the best choice. He did a fantastic job with Have Not Been the Same.

Goddamn, I was in tears just reading those excerpts. The amount of respect they have among their peers is very moving. Can't wait to read this when it comes out.

Apparently Gord himself wrote the forward for the book.

Only thing better would be if Gord had written the whole book himself. Looking forward to this. I think Michael Barclay will do a fine job. He wrote a number of great pieces on the Hip for MacLean's last summer and was the first one I remember to point out the cancer metaphor of the Jaws t-shirt.

I look forward to this. Hopefully the band is all involved.

Steve Jordan really nailed how I felt through that final show, realizing this is the last time I'd hear those songs live. It was fighting against this feeling of sadness to make sure I enjoyed the moment.

Have Not Been the Same is one of my favorite music books of all time. Amazing read, and so far the most comprehensive account of the 80s/90s CanRock era. I have no doubt his book about the Hip will be excellent.

And I love this quote from Rich Terfry (Buck 65) describing the Hip's last show:

"I’ve seen Iggy Pop and Tom Waits and James Brown and Bruce Springsteen—I’ve seen them all live. But I’ve never seen anything quite like that, ever. It’s hard to imagine that I ever will."

As a side-note, Buck 65 is a really interesting artist. If you haven't heard 'Talkin Honky Blues,' do yourself a favour; it's probably in my personal top-10 albums of all time.

I'm looking forward to this, but what I'd REALLY like is a memoir from one of the band members themselves. This may be sacrilege, but I'd kinda prefer that it not be Gord (though I'd love a memoir from him of course) - just because a third-person perspective on Gord D in particular would be very, very interesting. The most fascinating part of James Fearnley's book was the glimpses it provided into what it was like working with Shane MacGowan. Not that Gord D is anything like MacGowan, except in being a riveting and gifted front- man, but you know what I mean.

Rob Baker seems like an excellent and expansive raconteur. He'd do a great memoir, I suspect, were he so inclined.

My one fear is that although this book appears to have the endorsement of the band (Gord writing the foreword), I haven't read a description that alludes to in-depth interviews with band members.

From the ECW Press website: In the first print biography of the Tragically Hip, acclaimed music journalist Michael Barclay talks to dozens of the band’s peers and friends about not just the Hip’s music but the American albatross, the band’s role in Canadian culture, and Gord Downie’s role in reconciliation with Indigenous people.

There is no mention of band involvement. This would be a shame. I guess it would leave the door open for a band autobiography down the road, and although I agree that Rob is a interesting storyteller, I think the best book would come from the best writer in the band.

The Beatles Anthology is my favourite rock biography - others have mentioned Pearl Jam 20 was written the same way. The band's story...told from quotes by themselves and their close associates. Different perspectives on the same events. This format ups the accuracy and curbs hyperbole. Two of fatal flaws (lack of accuracy/truth and hyperbole) that, for me, turn me off biographies.

I'd also prefer it if the band were involved, but I'm still excited to read this thing regardless. Barclay is an excellent music writer and I'm looking forward to reading all the cool stories and anecdotes from the Hip's peers. I was instantly hooked just reading that teaser from Macleans.

The book is now listed on Amazon. Hardcover edition comes out April 3rd.
