Interview with Rob Baker -
arewhyehen - 06-29-2017
So, as many of you know, my girlfriend and I had the chance to head up to Kingston and interview Rob at his house last winter.
We have finally had the chance to post it for all of you to listen..
He talks about his bands before the Hip was formed, early touring days, unreleased Hip music and his new favourite Canadian band... He also gives a hilarious response when asked what he is up to now days.
Hope you guys enjoy.
Ryan and Gabby

Great job! A nice wide range of questions and interesting topics given the short time frame. Next time bring a couple of cases of beer over to his home and keep him talking longer!
Would have loved to have been there for the 6 night stand at the Mexican restaurant. They were the best mariachi band in Halifax that week.

Great job! I really hope they put out all that extra material that he talked about. If we can't have anymore concerts, it's the next best thing.

Haha. The mic went off but we stayed around for about 2 hours and talked about random stuff. Nicest dude ever. We have already posted this here, incase you missed it, here are a few of the Hip related things we talked about after the microphone went off..

Never heard the EP called the "baby blue" album before. That shall be its name henceforth for me!

I think "Baby blue" refers to the first pressing of the EP on RCA before they signed their record deal. Same cover photo but a lighter shade than the MCA pressing

good work. i love his deep voice
his comment about no more touring got me thinking ... do you think the band would have continued if it had been one of the other guys who was sick? if johnny couldn't play anymore, do you think they would have found a new drummer and moved on? i think back to Dave Matthews Band who hired Jeff Coffin when LeRoi died a few years ago. but it much more difficult to replace your lead singer.

Some great stuff in that interview, particularly his thoughts on the upcoming documentary. Also interesting to hear the reason why they rarely play songs from UTH and RA (coles notes summary: Downie's voice changed/dropped a bit over the years and he couldn't hit some of the high notes anymore, so he no longer enjoyed singing songs like Cordelia, etc..)
I also enjoyed his story about the girl in Las Vegas who mistook him for Dave Grohl. And I'm not surprised in the least to hear that his favorite current artist is Jason Isbell.
