Well, they did it!

All five members of The Tragically Hip will be appointed officers of the Order of Canada, Gov. Gen. David Johnston announced Thursday.
The Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie will accept his insignia at a presentation “in recognition of outstanding Indigenous leadership” at Rideau Hall on Monday in Ottawa.
Sylvia Maracle, the executive director of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres, will also be appointed to the Order of Canada “for her leadership in shaping the urban Indigenous experience and for her efforts to promote the well-being of Indigenous peoples across Canada.”
According to the office of the Governor General, Hip members Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair members will receive their insignia at a later date.
More to come.

I was having flashbacks to Justin Trudeau being sworn in at Rideau Hall, but I guess this is nothing like that. I'm sure its invite only, as there are lots of recipients, and I'm sure its purely for family and close friends.
However, it will be recorded and broadcast, as I have certainly seen videos of these ceremonies before.

I knew this day would come for Gord, but I was pleasantly surprised that all the guys were being honoured. Great stuff!

What about Mike Downie and Jeff Lemire if this is for work with indigenous issues?

I believe the honour requires a sustained contribution and is not given based on one particular act. I think the band is being recognized for the totality of their contributions and body of important charitable work. I'm not sure Mike Downie and Jeff Lemire have that legacy yet. Maybe someday.

Of Course, I am just a little surprised that the rest of the band is getting this, that is all. And I think if the band is getting this then someone like Mike should as well. My girlfriend just interviewed Mike a few weeks back and he is still heavily involved in the process for the Downie/Wenjack foundation..

The band has been making music together for thirty years and certainly deserve to be in the company of Gord and the other musician recipients IMO. While Mike has been Gord's brother for longer than 30 years, I see Potsie's point that this honour requires more than the year or two Mike has been involved with Secret Path.

Does anybody know what the story behind the patches and button on his jacket are? I've been curious since I started noticing them at the Secret Path shows.

The band is getting theirs for their activism re: environmental and social issues. Gord is for both this and his work with indigenous issues. As Scotty said, they've been at this for 30 years; Mike and Jeff much less.
