So Gord Said They Were Working On New Songs... - FourPistols - 03-10-2017

...back in the fall, during his incredible interview with Peter Mansbridge.

Since then, we haven't really heard anything more about this from anyone in the band or around it. Or at least I haven't.

Is a new album even possible now? Hopefully, but I wonder.

Will we eventually see the shadow album of Man Machine Poem? Or perhaps those leftover songs form the starting point.

It seems awfully quiet in Hip land these days and maybe there's good reason for that, that I just have a hard time coming to grips with.

I hold out hope that while the touring band may be retired, the band who has written hundreds of incredible songs is not done yet.

Thoughts? Hunches? Rumours?

I wouldn't hold out for this. We might see the release of some pre-recorded stuff from the band. But it sounds like they're done recording together now.

Gord probably meant that they were simply putting finishing touches on songs that they already have in the can. Perhaps the MMP shadow album might actually see the light of day? Hard to say at this point. But as far as writing new material and further recording, I agree they're most likely done.

It's been less than a year since they released MMP. I don't know of any bands that are still together that have released two albums in less than a year, let alone one that has called it quits.

They are musicians...this is what they love to do. Of course they always have new song ideas in the works..but let them chill. Maybe one day we will see something but I doubt it will be any time soon. Just trying to be realistic. Haha

Well they announced Gord's diagnosis on May 24, started the tour 2 months later and month after that, it was all over. I still haven't digested it all, and I certainly would love to have new Hip material, but I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that it's all over; it was certainly a whirlwind of emotions.

Yes, Gord did say they had other material but I would imagine they are in no hurry to get it out; I mean, they did release an album less than a year ago, so I would guess it would be at least another year before they put anything else out. They certainly have more important things to worry about!

True, but I think it's safe to say that Gord's illness makes this a very different situation than most other bands. If they're going to do more recording, I'm betting the plan is to do it sooner than later as long as his health allows. I agree it'll be a while yet before they release anything though.

For what it's worth, I spoke with someone involved in the band's management in December and she said they had not been working on any material since MMP. Likely, Gord's statement was about old stuff that they never released. But nothing new.

Like most, I would love anything new that they may have. I'm sure the emotions of the diagnosis and tour probably have some ideas for songs if they decide they want to try new stuff. While I don't think its likely, I would say it is a possibility.

I would also love to have releases of everything that was left off the various albums. While we've heard some of them, there's probably a bunch that would be interesting to hear.

I think they're probably done with anything new but I'm still hopeful the creative drive might see them back on the studio for one more session.

Give me the M@W companion album. Given what made it onto the album, I would love to hear the songs that didn't make it.

Bumblebee was a PP outtake.

They have on average about 2-4 songs that didn't make it onto every album. They usually eliminated 1-2 songs in the first week of recording and another 1-2 in the last week of recording.

I had expected a live album of the tour around Christmas, but then with the announcement of a documentary (later this year?) I'm guessing it's possible packaged together.

MMP may not be a bad way to finish. A very good album, in a career where they had nothing less than very good albums. Closing with a "scraps" album -- as much as I'd like to hear it -- could maybe be an odd way to cap off a successful run. Package together B-sides with something else, like an live album, and maybe its more marketable to a wider audience

I also wonder how many extra songs were really finished or close to complete. My impression is they seemed to move on from an idea if it was not working, just based on the few tracks that they did play or were jamming on live that never made it on to an album.

Finally, I wonder what Gord's capacity is for work, recognizing studio is not live but it's still a physical and mental exertion. I was glad to see the clip of him out with Blue Rodeo, but that was tough. Knowing others dealing with a similar diagnoses, seems some days are great and others are a physical and mental struggle -- added challenge is that you can't predict what type of day it will be.

The search for A-Sides may be over.

I've always thought of Coke Machine Glow being the proper companion record there. Look at how many of the Phantom Power tour "rants" made up that record (Starpainters, SF Song, Neverending Present, Heartache, Blackflies, Lofty Pines, Elaborate, Every Irrelevance and Insomniacs were there since 1998 or before; Trick Rider, Canada Geese and Chancellor came late 99).
