2017 Ass Kickers! - sean.bonner - 01-17-2017

A new year with new music !

Already, there`s a 2017 release that is kicking my ass.

Last year, I fell in love with the new Arkells album, and that perhaps rekindled my love for alt-pop-rock. In the same vein as Morning Report...

I am more and more impressed with each listen!

Jan. 17th, and I may have already found my album of the year

The Rural Alberta Advantage will be putting out a new disc this year. They dropped the second single a couple weeks ago -- called Beacon Hill about the Fort McMurray wildfire. It's great. Can't wait for the album.

I am hoping 2017 will be the year we finally get new albums from Gorillaz, Wolf Parade, and aren't Pearl Jam due for something new this year too?

Yea, it's been almost 4 years since Lightning Bolt. Jeff Ament mentioned recently that they had begun the writing process, and that they'd spent some time in the studio in between tours. They're notoriously slow, so I'd be surprised if we saw anything this year. Maybe October/November at the earliest.

And I forgot, there are rumors of a new Social Distortion album this year. Feels like I've been waiting an eternity for that one.

My favourite of this new year so far. Here are a couple tracks.

Looking forward to new Austra later this month as well.

Thanks for the Cherry Glazerr recommendation! This band is right up my alley.

Yeah, I checked the out too -- pretty good. Go find the video for Nuclear Bomb, it is hilariously perverse.

Some of you guys might be into the new Strand of Oaks too. More rocked up than their previous releases.

Radio Kids

Rest of It

Highly underrated band. Strand of Oak's album "Heal" was in my top three albums of 2014. I'd highly recommend checking it out to anyone who hasn't yet discovered this guy.

Father John Misty is divisive, but I really like his new single and I'm looking forward to the album.

Oh, and the new Grandaddy is sounding promising too.

My early front runner for album of the year. These guys just keep getting better.

This album is incredible.

I'll third that. I've spun this one a few times today and it's fantastic. I love the jarring transition from the gentle acoustic vibe of the first song "Riverview Fog" to the all-out assault of the second song, "Another Season Again" - almost feels like you are listening to two different bands. My early favourites are "The Elements Song" and the Kurt Vile sung "It's Easy (Like Walking)". I'm a Kurt Vile fan and although his singing can occasionally be suspect, he sounds great on this track.

When discussing the best bands in Canada I almost always forget The Sadies. But this album has them back on my radar and in that "Canada's Best Bands" conversation again, where they belong.

They seem to fall through the cracks sometimes. I think it's because they get more press for their collaborations than they do for their own music, which is a shame. As far as current Canadian rock bands go, these guys are easily top 10 in terms of songwriting and musicianship. I first became aware of them when a friend gave me a copy of their 2001 album Tremendous Efforts, which turned me into an instant fan. Since then I've bought most of their catalogue and have seen them 5 times (including shows with the Hip, Gord, and Neko Case).
