Setlist Poll -
Moof_Milker - 12-22-2016
Most of us seemed to love the Man Machine Poem set list format - 4 songs from each album. Just for fun, as we wind down the year, let's imagine The Hip went on tour again and played 4 songs from each of their 14 albums. Which 4 songs from each album would
you want to hear performed live?
To make it easy and hopefully a little more fun, I created an online poll. Just click the links and make your (anonymous) picks. Easy peasy.

I'll post the results here!

Great idea. Looking forward to seeing the results. In the meantime I will be campaigning hard for the inclusion of "Montreal" on the unreleased mini-set.
Re: Setlist Poll -
Escape@Hand - 12-23-2016
Basically picked all the songs I haven't heard live, plus a few favourites from albums that I've heard everything from. Also, for the bonus unreleased tracks I want to hear live, I added the two from Yer Favourites (No Threat, New Maybe), as there wasn't a place for them, even though they have been officially released. Would have added Dante and one of Forest Edge or Problem Bears for the other unreleased tracks.
Re: Setlist Poll -

Good point, Escape@Hand. Unreleased should really be "Any other Hip song not mentioned already." I'm hoping a few more people take the poll -- there have been 15 so far, hope to get at least 20. Lots of interesting results thus far...can't wait to share the results! I'll do so early next week, so stay tuned for The Hipbase's Fantasy Holiday Set List coming soon!

I was thinking recently about posting a topic wondering what people think the setlist would have been like should the unfortunate news never had come to pass. I doubt it would have been the same.
Re: Setlist Poll -

Over 20 people have voted so far! I'll leave the poll open for a couple more days as long as more votes come in. While there are some clear front runners, there's a ton of diversity in the picks! A testament to the quality and depth of The Hip's catalogue for sure. In fact, only
1 song in their entire catalogue has a zero votes.

That was fun to do. I ended up picking songs I never heard before. It would be quite the setlist for hardcore fan. The casual fan might not recognize at least half the songs

Ok, so over 30 votes came in! Without further ado, here's the

Lots to infer from the list! Of course, some rarely played fan favourites made the list...but it's also interesting to see which oft-played live songs
didn't make the list and which ones
did. The voting on some albums was closer than others but overall these were the clear winners. Thanks for voting...that was fun!

Here's a link to the survey...some votes are still coming in so the numbers may have changed. If you're interested, have a look at all the stats.

Re: Setlist Poll -

Surprised at the Trouble at the Henhouse numbers, in particular for Ahead by a Century which ranked number 2 for that album. I'm wondering why this song ranked so high? If you look at the Up to Here numbers, Blow at High Dough and NOIS ranked as the LAST two songs. This is almost certainly due to over exposure and listener fatigue. It can't possibly be because fans think those are the two worst live songs on that album. Blow is one the Hip's greatest live moments. However, I didn't vote for those two songs for the same "been there, done that, and want something different this time" reason that I didn't vote for ABAC. So why didn't ABAC suffer the same fate? Is this a post-Kingston bump in popularity or do people really feel that this is an essential song to any Hip set? Did people approach the setlist construction as if they were making a list for the last Hip show they would ever see (in which case I could see ABAC making the cut)?
I was also surprised to see Giftshop so low (only behind Coconut Cream and Butts Wigglin'). The outro on this song represents some of Rob's best work ever. I can only interpret this lack of "live love" as the fact (if I can arrogantly title my opinion as such!) that the Hip have never been able to translate the majestic feeling of the studio version to the live setting. It is one of the few songs in their catalogue for which I prefer the studio version, and it appears others possibly feel the same way.
In the end my faith in Hip humanity, although shaken by the TATH numbers, was restored by the inclusion of Put it Off on the list. Maybe the most underrated song in the whole catalogue by the wider public. It is the bridge backwards to Day for Night in that I think it is the only song on TATH that could have fit seamlessly on DFN. With that classic Hip slow build, it would be a live staple for any other band.

This poll reminded me of how happy I was that I recorded the songs I did in 2009 - there were a lot of rarely played songs and many they haven't played since
Emperor Penguin
An Inch An Hour
Queen Of The Furrows
Goodnight Josephine
Yawning Or Snarling
The Bear
Tiger The Lion
Country Day
IOD
The Drepression Suite...

Yea, that tour was incredible. In terms of setlists, I'd say it was probably the best tour they've ever done. Followed closely by the 2000 and the 2016 tours.

Had to leave the Kingston show at the beginning of the encore. Tiger the Lion started playing as my sister and I were walking out into the hallway. My sister had to pry my fingers from the frame.
Re: Setlist Poll -
Tomacco - 01-11-2017
As diverse as the setlists were in 2009, I honestly hated the setlist format. The intermission totally killed the momentum of the shows for me. I always felt like the show was really heating up, then boom, lights on, intermission. Then we come back and get the 3 acoustic songs (which was really cool), but again, the show picks up a vibe again, and then encore, and done. Hip shows usually have such a good flow to them, and I have a lot of fun just getting lost in it and enjoying it. But the intermission really killed that for me. Plus, it was an album tour, so setlists had a good chunk of WATS songs, which wasn't my favorite album. For example, apparently in contrary to most people here, I really don't like The Depression Suite, and seeing it open every show was a buzzkill.
For me, the MMP tour format was perfection. I saw 3 shows, including Kingston, and wish I had seen every single show that tour.
