I like some of their stuff, but I wasn't really a big metal kid, so I never became a fan. Growing up in the 80s I had a buddy who was into all of that speed/thrash stuff, and he always tried to sell me on it, but it just didn't do it for me. I was more into the hard-rock side of the spectrum (Zeppelin, Gn'R, AC/DC) and post-punk bands like U2, The Clash, the Police, and Midnight Oil. I always preferred melody and hooks over sonic bombardment. That being said, I do think Metallica are excellent musicians. I gave their new album a listen on the weekend and it's quite good.

A couple of years ago I watched a great documentary called "Metal- A Headbanger's Journey", which gave me a whole new appreciation for that genre and why people are drawn to it.

The best evidence of this is Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit Concert where all the artists play unplugged. Occasionally I like to have my ears pummeled and my brain rattled around inside my head by Kirk Hammett's shredding, but Metallica are also top-notch with acoustic guitars in hand. Most of my favourite Metallica moments on record are when they slow things down. Take a song like "Mama Said" off Load, for example. That song makes me believe that Metallica could be a hell of an alt-country band.
