The cancer announcement... -

One thing that astonishes me, especially in this day and age, is how the whole situation was kept under wraps until the major announcement. I work in health care, and I know the importance and value of PHIPA, the health information privacy act, but still shocked that nothing trickled out about Gord's situation. Kudos to all who were involved in his care...

Can't say enough good things about KGH. Saved my mom's life and helped my uncle, who also had glioblastoma, while he was in the later stages.
I remember there being people in/around Kingston who had said they'd heard rumblings in the early spring, but this was after the announcement so they could've been BSing.

I heard in February in the most annoying "my friend has a buddy in Kingston who heard..." type of way. (and I'm in the states!)
I never said anything but checked on google, twitter, etc every couple days and never a word. Somehow though I always believed it, and clues started adding up like the slow pace of the album release and lack of initial tour announcement, Gord not attending the honorary degree thing and having no comment at a major Water Keeper event... things like that.
The second that email came with the headline "sad news" I knew.

I have wondered how far the circle extended. Family, band, health care,Bernie and Patrick, or did it extend to Billy ray, rick Wellington,Jen pressy,Mav,hip infrastructure, some friends and fellow musicians?

It definitely is a testament to Canada as a society and how we treat out own celebrities. If it had been in the States or UK, chances are someone in the inner circle or that worked at the hospital would have "anonymously" spilled the beans the day after hearing about it for a quick buck from a tabloid.

The fact that news of Bowie's cancer didn't get out is far more impressive. This is good too, though, given the loose ethics of many health care workers I've run into.

i found out a few months before it was announced and it was a hard to carry and not share. every time i heard a tune, i wanted to tell whoever was beside me. we were all devastated by the news. we need to keep Gord pushing. I only shared with my wife. i was in Amsterdam last April and wrote a rather cryptic post. I was watching the possessed video and was overwhelmed. go back and watch that video - brothers in arms i called it.
also, the actual public announcement of Gord came on the same day that "The Hip Live Between Us" was released. 19 years apart. prophetic. and the hip do live between us. will and determination are powerful meds
