Blue Rodeo "1000 Arms" - potsie - 10-27-2016

Blue Rodeo's new album "1000 Arms" comes out tomorrow, October 28th. The Jan/Feb 2017 Canadian Tour tickets go on sale tomorrow as well and each ticket comes with a free album download. A few months ago, when talking about the album and Gord Downie, Jim Cuddy said,

“He's a magnificent guy and he’s been an incredible contributor to our world. Every so often it hits us, every so often it hit us when we were recording …,” Cuddy says, before revealing that it did makes its way into the music. “There are a few lines, but no there are no songs that are written (about that). There is one specific line that is specifically a tribute to Gord,” he says. Can't say the first single (below) is love at first listen for me. Seems like a direct attempt at scoring radio play with a Katy Perry-like chorus. Ah well, I'll be there in February anyway as these guys are not a live band to be missed.

Yea, I'm not a big fan of the first single. To me it kinda sounds like an inferior version of 2000's "Somebody Waits". Their last two albums were fantastic, so I'm hoping the material gets better on the new one.

I haven't seen a single review of this album. It's weird. Anybody have it yet? Is it any good? I loved their last record, but the first single for this album doesn't do it for me at all, and I haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet. It doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere either. It's like it's completely fallen through the cracks.

but social media is flooded with ads for it big time....quite annoying to the point of pushing me away from it

I've listened to it twice and I don't see it being much different then anything they've done in the past. As any Blue Rodeo album, I quite enjoy it!

I hate to say it but this is a really weak effort for BR. The last album was really good, this has a leftover b-sides feel to it. Other than a couple tracks its a miss for me.

Too bad, they have been one of Canada's most consistent bands up to this point, I think its time to pull the plug. IMO BR is a live band first and foremost, their albums hardly do their songs justice. I guarantee the songs off this album will shine better on stage. Save your money and buy a ticket instead.

Agreed. I've given it a few spins over the last week, and I'm trying really hard to like it. But to me they just didn't bring the magic this time. I thought their last two albums, In Our Nature and The Things We Left Behind, were two of their finest efforts. Sadly the new one pales in comparison. Saying they should pull the plug is a little extreme though. When you've made as many albums as they have, there's always gonna be one or two duds mixed in with the good ones. Ya can't knock it out of the park every single time. Will they ever make another album as brilliant as Five Days in July or Nowhere to Here? Hard to say. Maybe they should try a different producer next time and get themselves out of their comfort zone a bit.

All great points and yes I did overstate things with the plug comment, I think I'd prefer to echo your sentiment about getting out of the comfort zone so to speak. I just think they are at their best on stage, their live albums are my go to always.

Ironically, every ticket purchased on this tour comes with a free download of the new album, which is how I got my copy.

My take: it's...definitely an album that exists by blue rodeo. (shrugs)

I will listen and eventually decide for myself, however it's a shame to read these reviews after 'The Things We Left Behind' and 'In Our Nature'. Those are gems of albums.

Outskirts -> The Days In Between is such a great run of albums as well.

Agreed, it's one hell of a run. The Days in Between is criminally underrated in my opinion, and I've always thought it was one of their best albums. It also features two of my favorite Keelor tunes of all time, "Rage" and "This Road".

The Things we Left Behind and In Our Nature we fantastic albums, and coincidentally they were self produced. 1000 Arms which I am struggling to like they had brought a producer in with them. Maybe they should go back to self producing.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that. Out of curiosity I just looked it up and it turns out that former Rheostatic Tim Vesely produced the new album. Perhaps you're right, and they should simply go back to self-producing next time.
