Show Review From Those Who Watched It Onscreen - chagrinfalls - 08-23-2016

I'm interested to hear from folks who watched the Saturday performance onscreen rather than in person. I haven't actually seen or heard the taped performance, so I'd be really interested to know what your impressions were. Especially, where/how did you choose to watch it, & were there particular reasons for that choice; what were the sound & visuals like, & did you think the CBC did a good job; what else went along with the show itself (ie any pre- or post-show); overall impressions of the band, Gord, the crowd etc. I would just like to get a sense of what it was like, if people are willing to share their impressons. Cheers!

Also, does anyone have any leads on a link to a recording?

I was at the show and I saw the performance on tv. I thought the CBC did a great job overall but the mood was much more celebratory than what was depicted from the various audience close ups.
Also, if you watch the recording you couldn't really tell just how loud the crowd was singing throughout the show, but that's understandable.

That's a shame, because the crowd really felt like the 6th bandmember, & it was amazing to experience that. But yeah, I guess people may not necessarily have tuned in to hear us scream "WHERE THE GREAT PLAINS BEGIN!!!" at the top of our lungs lol.

I watched it at a 400 seat theatre with a bunch of other fans and it was great! Everyone was having a blast. A lot of cheering, a bit of dancing ( we are way too polite in SK and no one stands up at shows here), and a bit of singing. One thing I'm curious about from people who were there. Was there the usual big song along during ABAC or was it as subdued as it seemed from watching the recording. I got the idea that by that point in the show most everyone knew it was the end ( well Gord did say it would be their last) and so I couldn't hear the crowd singing along as much, and I do like to hear some crowd in the recordings. That's what makes live shows so great. know for me it was insanely emotional. After watching Grace, Too I was really wound up and by the time Ahead rolled around I was a basket case! I was singing my heart out though , while trying not to annoy the people around me. :lol:

What's funny is this show was wayyyyy more emotional for me to see than the live show in Winnipeg I attended. That one still feels surreal, but more just like any other Hip show I'd been to. But the Kingston show had such an unexplainable feeling. The fact that the entire nation and people around the world were watching what could potentially be the band's last proper show really made the whole thing very sad, even though I know the band would want us only to celebrate. I'm still feeling so utterly down.

I'd love to give a full review but I have two problems. 1, someone brought out the crown royal. 2, I was running around like a maniac seemingly all night trying to figure out how to get MORE SOUND out of the feed.

We were having a screening in the backyard. I did a soundcheck earlier and it was super loud. But the CBC feed was a little quiet. In the end I had to dismantle my receiver and speakers in my record playing room and bring it all outside. I felt like a roadie making all those little connections during a concert with little to no light - did it in record time though, and the neighbors were appropriately concerned and the partygoers satisfied.

Those encores, man. Gordie speaking to an entire country who had fallen silent to listen. Hit me right in the feels. I already had my goodbyes and moments of sadness in VAN/TOR/HAM though so this was all about having a good time and letting Gord have some moments with us. 10/10.

Next morning the wife says to me "we should do that again!"

I drove back from the Ottawa show just in time to watch it here in Moncton at the local theatre. Was about half full. The crowd was loudly cheering on the Canadian sprinter during her event and by the time the Hip came on, people were dancing in the aisles. It was a fun night, sad, but celebratory. The theatre cleared out pretty quick after the show but I just kinda sat there and watched the panel discussion for a few minutes.

Watched the show in SHerkston , Ontario on the big screen in the concert hall. People of all ages were watching, heard a few americans asking the staff who was playing.

I watched at home with my girlfriend mostly because I didn't want to have it ruined by other people. I wanted it to be intimate and mine. We had a few beers and sang along to the whole show. It was a lot of fun. I felt very much a part of the show and the mass crowd watching it. Was texting some family and friends who were watching it as well who live in other cities.

Thought the CBC did an amazing job. No commercials, no banners, no commentary, no interviews. Not even that many shots of the crowd. Just the band doing their thing. Like what many people have said here and other places, this is why we need a national broadcaster. To catch these moments in history.

I agree that the crowd noise could have been included more in the mix and actually commented before the show that I hoped that would happen. As mentioned above, it was really amazing seeing them this tour and how loud the crowd was. I remember thinking that you could hear Gord's vocals on top but underneath was this huge wall of sound from the crowd singing along. It was really amazing.

Watching it on screen though did highlight that Gord doesn't look well. When I saw them in Toronto (1&2) from the seats you couldn't really tell or on the screens. He sounded great and was dancing around (obviously not as much as usual). Watching the broadcast and seeing the close ups though, you can tell he is sick. Especially by the end of the show he looked just spent. The one moment that really hit me was leading up to one of the choruses of Courage seeing him look down at the prompter for the next line, which of course is 'courage'. Don't think I would have noticed that in the building.

Yeah his use of the teleprompters was very noticae for sure. When he couldn't remember big lines like those in Bobcaygeon, I realized all the excess need for his lyrics was no joke. Oddly he got all of Scared, but that's probably because he was glued to the prompted whereas for hits that he knows well he most likely was moving around too much and would forget to look. In Winnipeg he forgot the very last line of ABAC, but then to make it up he repeatedd it over and over. What a punch in the stomach! No Gord, you aren't disappointing us. Sad

Was lucky enough to hit Toronto (3) with my nephew , even luckier to hit Hamilton with my daughter ( our 9th show together , dating back some 17 years)... Really enjoyed toronto , but the Hammer was unbeleivable. I was totally engulfed with the emotion going back and forth from the stage to the crowd and back.

Torn about the Kingston show ... for as good as it was ( huge kudos to CBC for how they handled this event)...there was no way they could possibly convey what thae crowd inside that building was going through. Not a chance from the get go.

I'm ever so thankful that I got to see two gigs from this tour,especially with so many fans not getting a chance .

He mixed two words in Scared -- reversed art and works -- in person, his bemused smile after that was pretty funny. Not sure if the broadcast caught it.

I have not watched the full broadcast. After living the moment, I think I'll set it aside for a few months and then watch it. I did check out the first few minutes, and it looked really good. We were pretty close to the stage, so did not get the full effect of the backstage lighting that ran along the top deck of the building. Looked great.

Remembering words has never been his forte. Last year on the FC tour where he had a teleprompter, at one show I was at he made a total mess of M@W where he made a really funny recovery.

Oh yeah I heard that tiny flub. Seemed like a minor brain glitch or something. But really in the scheme of things it was pretty minor. After missing the middle bit in 100th Meridian he kinda shook his head like he was mad at himself. The more I watch back clips from the tour, the more I get the sense it was taking him a ton of mental effort to keep up. But maybe it's my imagination. I dunno. At the same time I know what it's like to have lyrics in front of you. Your brain turns off and starts to rely on them simply because theyre there!

Saw three snows and periscoped the rest

Watched CBC show while vacationing in Maine...

few thoughts:

Crowd definately was muted - I know from the shows I went to that the crowd is much, much louder

Gord looked very frail when shot up close in HD...you really got a sense of how hard he had to press to get throuh the show

When watching live with a lot of crowd noise you really didnt notice Gords mistakes as much - it was a little hard to watch the CBC feed when he was screwing up...it just looked a lot more awkward and uncomfortable than it was when you were there live

the kisses before the show and before encore were more dramatic on television....you got to see theemotion and tenderness of it a lot better and was hardnot to get choked up

thought CBC did well...theyalways nail this type of show

i think CBC did an amazing job on the telecast. i watched it outside on the big screen with 7000 of my closest friends and the crowd noise i heard coming from the webcast was deafening. my ears were ringing.

at the end of the day, it is impossible to recreate the atmosphere of a live show on tv. as a tv viewer, we are just hoping for a reasonable hand drawn facsimile, which is what we were given... and more.
