The Depression Suite - spasticreelin - 08-05-2016

I appreciate the effort with this piece of music, but I've always thought it was a bit of a mess - some nice moments, but just doesn't work for me

Actually a song I hope they pass on as they journey east

I'm sure many on the board love it though - what are your thoughts about this?

This is the song I play at bars when they have an electronic jukebox.
9 minutes long rocks.
And I would love to see them open with this in Kingston but it is too obvious.

One of the only songs on WATS that I love, even despite the excessive Bob Rock-ery. I saw them play it live two nights in a row at the Fillmore in San Francisco on that tour, and it was absolutely brilliant.

Top-five favourite Hip song for me. The first two "movements" are great; the final one's transcendant.

Re: The Depression Suite - spottrax - 08-05-2016

It's an interesting piece for sure. A couple random thoughts about The Depression Suite...

I doubt The Hip will every play it live again. It is 9 minutes long, they could play three other songs for the price of this one...and make more fans happy (probably).

Another reason the band probably won't play it...The song really requires key boards and extra backing vocals. One of the few Bob Rock era songs that would really suffer live if they don't use an extra musician on it. It hasn't been played since the WATS tour...I'm pretty sure this is the reason.

On a personal note. I LOVE the first part. To me, that should've been a song by itself. The rest is decent (IMO) and DOES go together well enough for the whole piece but it's not in my top 20. Robbie Baker's bad-ass solo near the end is super cool and sets up the climax...

I'd love to see the song played one last time....especially in Kingston. It would make for an awesome ending...last encore!

Epic (3) songs.

Had the pleasure of hearing it live years ago. Fantastic song.

Heard it in Kingston in 2009 at the benefit for Glenn Williams. Had a little more feeling behind it that night.

And with everything going on the last line would really resonate...

"Don't ya wanna see how it ends?"

I was headed to the '09 show in Halifax hoping to see this song more than anything else. From my first spin of WATS, I thought this song was pure genius.

I know it's an incredibly long shot, but would love to see this pulled out in Ottawa.
