Geddy Lee shares thoughts on the Hip - direwolf74 - 08-04-2016

Just came across a cool interview with Geddy Lee on CBC Music sharing his thoughts about the Hip. Seems like it's gonna be part of the Kingston broadcast.

I seem to remember hearing that there is a recording of the Limelight cover, and the only folks in possession of it were Rush themselves?
Might have been in an old "Tales From The Hip"?

Anyone know anything about this?

Was it for the Juno lifetime achievement award where there was a bit of an introduction of other bands talking about The Hip? I remember Rush was involved and Alex made some joke basically insinuating him and Paul have shared a few to many tokes together. Sounded like the two bands became pretty good friends.

The Barenaked Ladies were in the clip as well, said something along the lines of "we like to think of The Hip as are older, cooler, stoner brothers", LOL

That was for Rush's Juno for lifetime achievement award (I think that was the award). I remember hearing in an interview one time where I think it was Gord Sinclair said there never was a full version, said their version went "off the rails" not much after this little clip was recorded. Pretty sure this was down in the studio while recording Day For Night if I am not mistaken?

“The first time you listen to one of their records it kind of sneaks up on you,” Lee says. “It sounds simpler than it is. There is a particular way the power of those guitars work together.… [They] always sound sinewy and muscular. Then you put Gord's voice and his lyrics on top of that, and after repeated listening, you really start to love it. It just gets inside you. I think that's a trademark of the Hip.”

This is very perceptive. I wouldn't make this case about "Fully Completely," as Lee does here - that album seems chock-a-block with "big" songs with epic hooks, hit singles - but it very definitely describes later Hip stuff. This was precisely my experience with NFPA, for example, an album I initially rejected as uninteresting, but which ended up getting under my skin so that I had to go back and re-evaluate. Sharp insight by Lee...and it also explains why some critics always shat on the Hip, having dismissed them on a listen or two (as well as for wearing the wrong clothes and having many frat-boy fans).

(I don't care a fig for Rush, though - can't stand Lee's vocals and 'prog rock' in general ain't my thing).

Not to hijack the thread, but that NFB video brought to mind a 1-hour documentary that was filmed on the Hip way back when (1991?), built around a show they were doing in Halifax. What the hell is the name of that doc, and where can we find it?
