Documentary anyone? - spottrax - 07-07-2016
Many of us have said it before but The Hip really need a full-length documentary film. If this is indeed the last chapter for the band (god I hope GD does rally and have many many more years etc with his family and the band).....but if this is it, I hope someone is documenting the rehearsals, the thoughts and stories of GD and the rest of the guys on the long and wonderful career they have had. If I was a film maker this is a lovely story about 5 high school buds making good...and captivating the country they come from. Other than Mercury, Springsteen, Vedder and at times Bono I can't think of a better showman, poet, leader, unique voice and all around frontman than Gord Downie. Those of us who get it.....are really lucky. I think a documentary would put all of it in perspective and get all of that wonderful music to not only us fans but to the curious folks who never quite jumped on board. Let the story be told.... :thumb:

I guarantee there are likely dozens of filmmakers out there currently bidding on the rights to make this film. There's probably a book in the works as well in the near future. Seriously, how could there not be?

Right on. My son is an award winning film editor (Emmy and others) in TN. I kind of propositioned him last year about either a project with The Hip or The Replacements. He didn't have time but loved the idea. Making a full length film about them is quite a project. A very long and painstaking endeavor for sure. I'm going to keep prying him a bit. Like you said...hopefully there are filmmakers out there bidding on the project. Hopefully, whoever does it has the right amount of skill and passion for it. There have been some outstanding Roc Docs in the past decade...The Hip could be one of the best of all if done correctly!

I'm thinking of something akin to Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. That was an incredible music doc. I loved that it featured other artists that were inspired by them. It would be great to get the likes of Joel Plaskett, or High Dillon in there talking about playing with the Hip. The guys themselves talking about the phases of their career, their live show, specific songs, the making of albums etc. I hope this happens.

Are people already forgetting about Bobycageon? Sure, it didn't have a lot of Hip footage, but it was a documentary about Hip fans and what a particular song means to them.

I'd rather see a documentary of the tour itself behind the scenes, and have the Kingston CBC show tie into it. Although I also want a career retrospective.

I liked Bobcaygeon (film) but I personally would like to see something that chronicles their entire history. I too really liked the Rush doc (Pearl Jam's 10 is great as is the Tom Petty & Heartbreakers doc).
It would be cool to have the guys tell us their story in their own words... What brought them together? What was the bands favorite phase? Least fave? Talk about each album. Did the band nearly break up ever? The current situation needs no emphasizing how difficult etc but I'm curious to know stuff like, has anyone come close to throwing in the towel? Did the band ever get in any trouble on the road? (come on....I'm sure someone tossed a tv or something at some point lol). Thousands of shows, all those recording sessions, producers, record company people (ugh). What is it like to be so beloved in Canada...... there has to be some good stories.
Gord D has changed tremendously from album to album, tour to tour. Appearance, vocally, even his on-stage persona changes. In 09 he was very talkative and accessible, on the FC reboot tour he basically just sang the songs. The old days there were rants galore but not much actual banter with the crowd. All intentional changes but for what reasons? Some tours they broke out rarities (07/09) and others just did Hits... I'm curious how the band reacted to GD climbing into the crowd those times in 09....that was pretty nutty and unpredictable. Some great vids on Youtube from this era...Downie was off the charts with the antics...some resulting in some nasty spills (One in Locked that I remember....yikes).
Some of the potential documentary could be about the songs and their Canadian connections. Certainly some footage of the band going to some of the far and out of the way parts of Canada.
I always got the feeling the Hip wanted to really keep a lid on anything other than the music and let the shows and albums represent everything. I think it is time for their story to be told. The good and the not-so-good. Every single band has challenges and in the case of the HIp...success.

I'd love an indepth around the time of Road Apples, I remember first time looking at the cd pics and thought, these guys look like the baddest motherfuckers I've ever seen

I still have a full-sized poster of that photo. I was going through my Hip collection a few days ago and found it rolled up in a tube along with a few other posters from over the years (DFN, PP, IVL). I also love the shots on the back cover of them walking around in the corn field.

If people are, would you blame them? It was a very forgettable "documentary" and quite a letdown in my opinion.

I wish I could find my old VHS recording of "Full Fledged Vanity", that was a GREAT behind the scenes documentary right when they were beginning to hit their popularity peak.
EDIT: I just did a quick search, its on Youtube! Going to have to sit and watch this later tonight when I get home!

Great find! I remember recording Full Fledged Vanity off CBC when it first aired, and I must have watched that thing 100 times.
