why are the setlists so difficult, it doesnt seem like Pearl Jam has a super tough time!! we need to face the facts that certain songs will probably not be touched

This is excellent news. Baker's setlists were often too safe, boring, and predictable. Hopefully Paul can inject some much needed variety into the sets.

So...historically RB and GS have written the set lists? Seems like set lists don't vary much during their tours, no? Whenever I've seen them multiple times on the same tour there's been very little variation in the songs they played. I got tickets for the 2nd Toronto show, so I'm not going to look at any previous set lists because I want to be surprised.

From what I can remember, Rob Baker took over setlist duties around 2011, which is exactly the point where their setlists started to become stale. Back when Sinclair was writing them, the Hip were the golden standard in terms if mixing it up from night to night. Their only rivals at that time were Pearl Jam and Springsteen. No two shows were ever the same. Gord Downie once said that Sinclair had a rotating system he used where eventually we'd hear every song in the Hip's catalogue. The 2009 WATS tour was probably the last time they had any real variety in their setlists, especially when it came to the deep cuts. Man, that tour was incredible.

Thought opening acts would be friends of the band - Harmer one show, etc

Would have been 30 bands lining up to do that

Back in 2004, I saw The Hip play in Sarnia ( :thumb: ), Ottawa, and Kingston and each time the set list was almost identical...save for a few substitutions here and there. Were there really tours where they mixed it up that much from show to show? Not a complaint, but from the 15 times I've seen them it seems like they usually play a pretty standard mix of 5 or 6 new songs along with an assortment of the hits. Nothing on the level of PJ or Bruce. Am I incorrect?

I'm guessing those were all outdoor festival shows? The Hip have always done the greatest hits thing when it comes to festivals. But on regular arena/theatre/club tours, they were always one of the best in the biz when it came to mixing up the set, especially prior to 2010/11.

I miss the days where you would be surprised almost every song. Recently, you could guess every song that was coming up. The 2009 tour was fantastic for mixing it up.

You aren't kidding! Just scrolled through some of the setlists from that tour. Fantastic. I lived overseas from the end of 2004 until 2010 so I missed Hip shows in that time. When I saw them 2x in 2011 both sets were the same.

In fairness to Rob, the US NFPA tour was fantastic for setlists. I know the Canadian tour wasn't the same, but the two shows I saw in upstate New York rival any I've ever seen. How's this for an epic finish to the main set (from Rochester 2012): Yawning or Snarling, Done and Done, Three Pistols, Long Time Running, On The Verge, Goodnight Attawapiskat. Totally epic!

Hopefully Paul can come up with some gems for this tour!

Just scrolled through some of the dates on the 2012 tour, and you're absolutely right. Some pretty great setlists on the U.S. leg.
