Ticketmaster is putting new platinum tickets up that weren't available hours ago. I'll admit to buying their platinum seats during the pre sale, but they were $750 for row 2. My question is, why are the prices going up, and why weren't the available during public sale, and how many are they hanging on to? Take a look. I saw platinum seats, row 5 for $875 available during the public sale and they all sold out.

Well, from my experience I bought platinum seats at 3 shows. Basically, I got better seats for cheaper than now because I had early access from the fanclub presale.
And if the band gets a bigger cut of the action, I am fine with that. The boys need a nest-egg.

Hopefully the band gets a huge chunk of those fees. If not it would be a shame for ticket company's to profit off of something as tragic as this. They are charging close to Super Bowl prices here. In fact my for what I just paid to go to games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup final it was still less than $950. Absolutely insane.

The prices are based on supply and demand. As in they limit supply to increase demand so they can up the price.

TicketMaster position it as their way to combat the secondary market, where I think it really is just a slightly different secondary market. In the Kingston presale about three runs of platinum appeared.

It's supply and demand based on sales of all inventory for a specific show and the overall tour. TM has algorithms that set the price based on the actual demand once the on sale begins. Platinum seats are held back so the promoter and band can assess demand and be compensated for their work(band) and monetized risk(promoter).

I know it stinks, but unfortunately $126 CAN for lower level and floor seats for a tour of this magnitude (h/t R40)....is just as absurd as those $1375 ACC seats.

Everyone must realize that The Hip have agreed to the platinum tickets, so it's not "greasy" at all. The most frustrating thing about this is that there wasn't any (that I recall) notice about it. I was on the presale and platinum tickets showed up. If I had been prepared to pay $350-$500 (what the platinum tickets were at the time) I would have justified it, but in the heat of the moment, not realizing that the best tickets were being released (which has never happened before) I figured I could get good seats. Turns out I was wrong, and that's on The Hip for not disclosing that information when they announced the tour and pre-sale info.

While I can't afford to pay that kind of money for the three shows I'm going to, I would have paid it to get good seats for one, had I been properly informed and prepared before hand. I feel like they have screwed over their biggest fans in this, and that's a shame. This is (likely) going to be our last time to see this band, and while they have every right to charge what they feel they can get for the tickets, the communication has been lacking and now the fans are angry. A lot of this could have been avoided with better communication.

I'm ok with the inflated price as long as the band gets a cut. But like you I wasn't aware of this system in place, and like you I was left panicking in the que, which resulted me in grabbing a pair of less desirable tickets for the sake of having tickets. Additional platinum seating was added long after the pre sale had ended, without warning, and for an increased cost. Initially I saw row one during pre sale for $500, after selling and replenishing their platinum seat stock since Tuesday, they are back to row 6 for $950. It's unfair in my opinion when so many people got left out of the general sale, like being squeezed from both sides.

Most likely the band not know it would be this difficult to get tickets. The platinum prices skyrocketed up from the $350-500 price range only because so many fans bought /want tickets. If no one buys the robot/scalper and platinum seats , prices will drop.

The proof is the other bands who refuse to sell platinums. Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews, Foo Fighters are all bands that I frequent and they do not offer platinums and there's no tiered pricing. The price is the price whether your front row or back of the building.

And it's right in that ticketmaster FAQ I copied/pasted that you denied, and in the Trent Reznor article someone posted, and if you google "Platinum tickets" there are a million other articles about the artists doing this so they profit from "true market value" rather than the scalpers. It is was clearly the bands' call. This also isn't the first time they've done it, if I recall these were available for some, or all, of the Canadian Fully and Completley shows and no one bought them.

As someone who purchased platinum tickets, I'm hoping the guys get a significant chunk of the proceeds there. I am assuming the guys are in a tough spot after this tour, what they do next and where the money will come from. At least this gives them a nice cushion for the near future.. I hope.

Doesn't work that way. They agree on their salary with the venue before tickets are sold. The extra money certainly doesn't go to them.
