Happy 25th birthday, Road Apples - The Heron Outside - 02-19-2016

25 years since it was released on Feb. 19, 1991, I still think this is the band's rawest effort in their career. It's brash, uncompromising and full of swagger. It might not be their "Best" record but it captures their live intensity (Or, what used to be their live intensity) better than any record has.

love road apples! that is an album that has songs that havent seen the light of day live in forever

Without question my all time favourite album. Wouldn't you love to hear this album in its entirety live?? Is there a better couple of songs live than Little Bones and three Pistols??!! Nope.

Up to Here got my attention. But it was Road Apples that solidified my early obsession. It's just a perfect rock n' roll album from start to finish, dripping with bluesy swagger and raucous energy. You can tell that recording in New Orleans totally rubbed off on them. I remember interviews at that time where they said songs like The Luxury and Last of the Unplucked Gems were directly inspired by their visit to that city. The Hip have such a rich and brilliant back catalogue. Such a shame that they always choose to ignore it when they play live.

I bought the Road Apples on vinyl a couple of years ago and remembered how much I loved the album. Beginning to end, singing and playing along had me reliving high school.

Hard to believe it's been a quarter of a century - about $7.50.

Couldn't agree more. I loved Road Apples. It was EXACTLY what I wanted to hear at that time. As I recall, though, it was viewed by many as a 'step back' from UTH, a claim I could not fathom at the time. Indeed, for the first phase of their career, I had a theory that Hip fans broke into two categories: the ones who loved UTH and FC, and the ones who loved RA and DFN. I was definitely in the latter camp :rambo:

The lyrics on RA are much closer to the fully-formed Downie, that's for sure. UTH is lyrically quite uneven, still too close to the juvenilia of the EP, still a man finding his lyrical voice. By the time we get to RA, he's basically arrived.

Nice read. A Don Smith masterpiece indeed. Ear Candy at its best. If there is another recording that better captures the true live sound of a band, I'd like to hear it...and the songs aren't too bad either :wink:

I believe the photo toward the end of the article is of a cover band, not Das Hips.

I just got the old mag called "The Magazine" out of Ottawa,circa 1991 in the mail yesterday, off Ebay. The interview was with Paul and he said they were gonna name the album "Caution Horse shit"

Yes, that makes sense. But the caption beneath the photo reads: "The Tragically Hip perform at Oakwood Place in Hamilton in 2002."
