The Ongoing History of New Music - Fully Completely - Tthip - 11-12-2014

And speaking of Fully Completely, a terrific deluxe reissue will hit the stores next week. Since I wrote the liner notes for this one, I’ve also turned it into an episode of The Ongoing History of New Music. It’s a very deep dive–a fully, completely one–into the making of the album. I had access to the Hip’s archives (you wouldn’t believe all the stuff they’ve saved!) and help from the band’s Rob Baker. We’ll hear him on the show talking about the album’s artwork, the story behind “50 Mission Cap,” how the album was recorded and a cool story about “Wheat Kings.” Oh, and there’s a brand new Hip song in the mix called “Radio Show.”


You’ll be able to hear that show on the following stations this weekend:

I had access to the Hip’s archives (you wouldn’t believe all the stuff they’ve saved!)

They seriously need to release some of that stuff. Put out a b-sides collection, bring back the Live from the Vault series...anything. I'm all for the remastered album reissues, but these guys are leaving a lot of money on the table with all that material collecting dust in their vaults. It's not like they have to go the expensive route by releasing CDs. Just digitize everything, get them mastered, and release them online like every other band on the planet seems to be doing. It's a no-brainer in my opinion.

The cost of this must outweigh the profits in the eyes of the band's management. As recent tours have showed us, the band and their management have become more concerned with appeasing the mass market in the hopes of squeezing every last dollar of marketability out of this band late in their career. They're thinking more about the person that buys a few records a year and doesn't want to worry too much about what he/she is purchasing; they're thinking less about their dedicated fans.

If they're not releasing more unheard stuff now, it's doubtful they ever will.

Sadly you're probably right. But damn, it would be really cool if they liberated some of that material.

Back in the summer, I was approached by Hip management with a proposal. “We’re planning a huge reissue of the Fully Completely album. We’d like you to write the liner notes. And we’ll give you access to everything in our archives.”

Cool.

So back in June, I dropped into the Hip’s management offices. Waiting for me was a mountai of boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes of material, all archived from the 1992-93 era of the band’s career. Everything was meticulously organized and catalogue,

“Go ahead,” I was told. “See what you can make out of all this. And if you need anyone from the band to help you out, just let us know.”

Once again, cool.

The results will finally be in stores next week–and at the risk of sounding vain, it looks f**king incredible. If you’re a Hip fan, there is no way you won’t want to own this thing. Before it gets released, though, I re-purposed much of what I learned into this week’s Ongoing History of New Music show. In it, Rob Baker from the band and I dissect the record and the songs in ways that have never been done before. It’s a must-listen for all Hip fans.
