Hip Tour in Jan/Feb 2015 -
Hugh23 - 09-01-2014
My wife and I spoke with Gord Downie and Billy Ray at Gord's solo show with The Sadies in Sarnia, Ontario. Both Gord and Billy told us The Hip continue to work on a new album. The Hip met recently to work together for four days. Also, Gord and Billy said the band is currently planning a tour which will take place in January & February of 2015.

A non-album tour will hopefully open the back catalogue up during set list selection!

I am sure they will throw in some new tracks like concerts before NFPA came out.

For the love of all things good and pure, please let this be the case. And hopefully Gord will actually stay within his natural vocal range on this tour. Needless to say, I won't be buying tickets for this until the reviews trickle in from the first couple of shows. After last year I swore to myself I wouldn't give them any more of my hard earned cash until they repaired their damaged live show. This time I'm not giving into temptation. I'm officially standing by my word.

I would hope it would be small venues like the WATS tour or was it WC where they opened up the catalog...that was a great tour but been a while.

Maybe try the Metallica thing & get people to vote for the setlist?
Or maybe not...

I don't think the new record will be out that soon. If this is a non-album tour it could mean a couple things.
- full album shows - I usually don't like these and I think they're gimmicky, but if it's centred around the 20th anniversary of Day For Night, I'd have trouble arguing with that.
- acoustic shows - less likely but if they were ever going to try it, a between-album tour seems like a good time for it.
I just hope they stay out of arenas in Canada. In Winnipeg last tour there must have been less than 10k at the show. I read a review for Edmonton that said attendance was 9000. At the show in Winnipeg in 2011 scalpers were giving tickets away the day of the show. Arena shows are fine but it's not a great atmosphere when it's 2/3 full.

Agreed. I think the Hip's arena days are over anyway, so I'd much rather see them in smaller venues. I was told that last year's outdoor show in Calgary at Millennium Park only had about 8,000 in attendance, which isn't a huge amount of people for a festival gig. Then again it was also pissing rain that day, so perhaps that kept some fans away. I'd love to see them play theaters again like they did in '09. Those shows were brilliant.

When was the NFPA Canadian tour announced, October? Hopefully we hear something sooner than later. In curious to see the venues and format for these shows based on what I said a few posts up.
