PRE-review of San Diego show - kari - 08-09-2002

This appeared online in one of the San Diego papers today. Ouchies...

Event Profile for Aug 11 TRAGICALLY HIP show at 4th & B:

The Union-Tribune's David L. Coddon wrote the following review of The Tragically Hip's 2000 release "Music @ Work":

Remember this song: "Putting Down." It's the best the Tragically Hip can get -- certainly so on this, the band's ninth album (including an early EP). The rest of "Music @ Work," however, is too pretentious and idiosyncratic for its own good, with lyrics that must be heard (well, maybe not) to be believed. Sample: As the moon groomed the airplane with its benevolent rays ("Freak Turbulence"), or I loaded the variables like masterpieces from under the germ-led advance ("Train Overnight"). Puh-leeze.

I used to get mad when I read bad Hip reviews but not I just shrug it off. I mean, I live in Winnipeg. In the Winnipeg Free Press IVL got ripped to shreds and the reviewer said Nickelback is now the biggest band in Canada. I say, Nickelback will be Canada's biggest band when they achieve the longevity that The Hip have.

The guy who did the review you posted has MAYBE listened to each Hip record once, and hasn't put my time into the band.

It used to be upsetting to hear bad reviews and comparisons to other Canadian bands. It always seems that there is a competition to see who the best band in Canada is.As long as you enjoy the music we should'nt worry. The Hip will never be replaced for me anyways. At edgefest I left before the end of Nickelbacks first song.(I went to see Cake).Sorry for rambling.
