Agreed Kim...great to see the Iraqis hopefully not living in fear as much today, but I'm quite sure this just sealed the next election for George W. It'll be interesting to see how he's dealt with, or if he'll admit to there ever being WMD. :roll:

But now Saddam is captured, what do you all think should be a fair punishment? Deathpenalty??

It is good news indeed.
I find it kind of interesting that it took American (intelligence) forces 9 months!

I just despise how the television stations are showing the "celebrations" in Iraq... it is so selected, and so much of the video looks as though it was from the 80's. And in one shot, I saw the people waving Soviet Union flags... Confusedcratch:
soooooo.... it is just too hard to believe that "everyone is celebrating".... grrr :x I hate the news.

Not only that, the media really reinforces the ethnocentric (and very propagandistic) idea that the Middle East is "uncivilised" because they keep on showing us celebrations which include guns... shame, because that tends to shape peoples' views.

Leslie, you have some valid criticisms about the errors and false perceptions the American military and political machinery have made in Iraq. However, I dont think you can expect the military to capture Saddam or supress the guerillas almost instantly. Nine months is a pretty reasonable time to catch Saddam, given that he has the advantage in knowing the country like the back of his hand, supporters to hide him and time to get away from Baghdad. I dont think the Fedayeen or the militant Islamists to give up just yet, but I think the citizens of Iraq will start to support the provisional government now that they know Saddam is captured and wont take back power. now, if Bush would get his foot out of his mouth and let the French and Russians bid on the contracts, maybe we can get more allies on the ground, even if they were actively delaying the conflict to support their own Iraq interests. I actually have more respect for the Canadian and German governments who opposed the war on moral principle, unlike the French and Russians.

As soon as I heard the news I started thinking about the punishment.. and there really are only two, Jail and Death. Of course there are variations of each.. imprisoned slave, torture followed with a slow death.

Both of which will present new problems.

If he is to be executed then there is risk of making a martyr out of him.

If he is jailed then there is the risk of more terrorist threats to have his release.

Should be interesting to see how this is handled..


Hmm, sitting here writing this and I had an idea, we give him an old fashioned labotomy and then give him back to Iraq! Then his followers have the cherished ex-leader thus eliminating the two problems I mentioned above.

If only it were that easy!

I highly doubt that. Also, if that were really true, he would have violently resisted capture, forcing US troops to kill him in the process, just like his two idiot sons.
