'96 Everest Disaster - fingernailsonhull - 09-08-2012

Any other amateur Everest-philes out there? Maybe I'm alone on that one. I read Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air earlier this year and couldn't put it down. Then I recently read Anatoli Boukreev's The Climb. Tonight I watched David Breashear's documentary about it, Storm Over Everest. I also picked up Beck Weather's Left For Dead and plan to read it soon. Anyone else read up on this much?

Into Thin Air is an excellent read! I read it a few years ago and couldn't put it down as well. I wouldn't consider myself an Everest-phile, so much as I love it when people challenge themselves and push their limits.

I'd recommend that people who've read Into Thin Air also read The Climb. It gives some additional perspective as Krakauer was pretty critical of Boukreev.

I read Into Thin Air this year as well, thanks for the recommendation on The Climb, I will have to pick it up.

Also for the Everest-philes out there, the CBC's Fifth Estate recently ran an episode on the disaster that was the 2012 climbing season, focused mostly on a 33 year-old Canadian with zero mountaineering experience who died during her descent. Yeah, I finished it a couple of weeks ago. I really enjoy Krakauer's writing. Under the Banner of Heaven is another excellent read.

Into the Wild is a fantastic book, and movie directed by Sean Penn and scored by Eddie Vedder.

I found the movie underwhelming after reading the book. But I feel that most of the time when I read the book first...

Read more on her recently. Apparently, she collapsed right next to the body of Scott Fischer. Still 1000 ft or so above C4. Been reading/watching more on this again recently. The wife and I are considering a trip in a few years to do the trek to Everest Base Camp. The TV series Everest: Beyond the Limit is fascinating.
