Streets Ahead - fingernailsonhull - 08-28-2012

Honestly, I like the album version better than the live versions I've heard. Has anyone made an attempt at the lyrics yet?

No idea about the lyrics. But I'm pretty sure I heard it last evening on CFNY. Sounds very cool. I definitely need to hear it again. Gords high notes and backup vocals stand out!!

Re: Streets Ahead - MattPower - 08-28-2012

I'll take a stab. I know a some of these can't be right but it's as good as I can get:

You with streets ahead, I couldn't sleep a wink
Staring in the dark by the light of your skin
Had myself sittin' on a suitcase
Is asleep in you in the upset slang

They don't wait, they won't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait

Listen you come here...?
...?
...? miles away ...?
Jingle jangle jerk, destroying...?

They won't wait, they don't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait
They don't wait, they won't wait
To stay together
They don't wait

Wait, waaaaaait!
Waaaaaait!
Wait!
Please, just stay to get there

They won't wait, they don't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait
They don't wait, they won't wait
To stay together
They don't wait

Wait, waaaaaait!
Waaaaaait!
Wait!
Please, just stay to get there

I also really like the studio version of this song, which is something I wasn't expecting. I most of Plan A consists of songs this good, Das Hips may just have a winner on their hands.

Re: Streets Ahead - longseason - 08-29-2012

It's "upset sleigh", I think. The metaphor of this song, I'd guess, is dog sledding. For example, the sled dogs run "with the weather" and "they won't wait to stay together". The "jingle jangle jerk" cements it for me. Also a few lyrics about "panting".

I would hazard that it's a metaphor for co-operation, and if you want to get "there", you gotta work together, even if it means slowing down for the rest of the group. As applicable to a band as a relationship or family. Of course, my interpretation is completely subjective.

I'm loving this goddamn song. The "hip pocket" keep this one tight, and the bass and drums are so full of energy and urgency.

Two tunes in and this album's kicking my ass. Bring on October 2!

Re: Streets Ahead - longseason - 08-29-2012

Check our my take below — it's a dog-sledding song. Recalls for me (lyrically at least) TATH's 'Don't Wake Daddy?' — ie "Sled dogs after dinner close their eyes on the howling wastes. Kurt Cobain reincarnated sighs and licks his face".

Quote:You were streets ahead, I couldn't sleep a wink
Staring in the dark by the light of your skin
Had myself sittin' on a suitcase
[…] asleep with you in the upset sleigh

They don't wait, they won't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait

Listen you can hear
The sound of the sleigh
The panting through the teeth
of all runners away
all the gentle words of the […]
Jingle jangle jerk, destroying our space

They won't wait, it don't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait
They don't wait, they won't wait
To stay together
They don't wait

Wait, waaaaaait!
Waaaaaait!
Wait!
Please, just stay together

They won't wait, they don't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait
They don't wait, they won't wait
To stay together
They don't wait

Wait, waaaaaait!
Waaaaaait!
Wait!
Please, just stay together.

Of course, I could be completely off base. Wouldn't be the first time.

Re: Streets Ahead - MattPower - 08-29-2012

Nice job! Just a couple words missing.

You're right about the dog sledding. At the Kee to Bala show Gord introduced the song as "a song about a sled dog team". If you fall off, they keep going and don't come back. (it's true! Did anybody ever see the Survivorman episode where he was in Labrador? He wanted to test the theory, and let them go when he decided they were more of a hinderence. They didn't come back).

Re: Streets Ahead - Daryl24 - 08-29-2012

ya good point. i seen that same survivorman lol les stroud kinda looks like gord to lol

Re: Streets Ahead - longseason - 08-30-2012

Going to make a few adjustments, because this song has been on repeat.

I think it's "all the gentle work of the trace and the jingle jangle jerk, destroying our space". Makes more sense. Getting a team of dogs to start running, and doing so in an organized manner while pulling a sled requires an intricate system of ropes, traces, and harnesses.

Back in the day, traces were made of leathery cords from seals or other available materials strong enough to withstand the stress from the dag yanking it.

Also, I believe it to be "panting of the team". Makes more sense.

Also, I think it might be "All the air's asleep with you in the upset sleigh".

Quote:You were streets ahead, I couldn't sleep a wink
Staring in the dark by the light of your skin
Had myself sittin' on a suitcase
All the air's asleep with you in the upset sleigh

They don't wait, they won't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait

Listen you can hear
The sound of the sleigh
The panting of the team
And all runners away
all the gentle work of the trace and the
Jingle jangle jerk, destroying our space

They won't wait, it don't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait
They don't wait, they won't wait
To stay together
They don't wait

Wait, waaaaaait!
Waaaaaait!
Wait!
Please, just stay together

They won't wait, they don't wait
They run with the weather
They don't wait
They don't wait, they won't wait
To stay together
They don't wait

Wait, waaaaaait!
Waaaaaait!
Wait!
Please, just stay together.

Re: Streets Ahead - robmiller - 08-30-2012

Is it just me or does anybody else think this song has a solo Gord feel. I think it sounds like it came off The Grand Bounce. Listen to Night is for Getting and compare.

Re: Streets Ahead - jgardz - 08-30-2012

It does have a Grand Bounce vibe, which is ok to me as I loved that album.

Except that Night is for Getting is actually a Hip song. It was a song written for IBE that ended up being dropped from the album. Since The Hip dropped it, Gord (who must've liked it) used it on TGB.

Re: Streets Ahead - jgardz - 08-30-2012

True, but the gord version is different (and better IMO) than the hips version
