Happiness is The Hip 'Enjoy yourself' is the band's message for Canada Day weekend show

The Tragically Hip has performed in hundreds of venues through the past 29 years: Arenas, music festivals, bars. And on June 30, the iconic Canadian rock band will add Butler’s Barracks in Niagara-on-the-Lake to that list.

The Hip hasn’t performed in Niagara much and its members are looking forward to the opportunity, said guitarist Paul Langlois. On its website, the band says the event is meant to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

“This kind of concept was appealing to us right away,” said Langlois, speaking from a busy street in downtown Toronto. “We enjoy playing places we haven’t played before and creating events that haven’t been done before.”

The concert, which also boasts performances by Death Cab for Cutie, The New Pornographers and The Rural Alberta Advantage, is a boon for the region. The Canada Day weekend concert could bring an economic spinoff of up to 20,000 fans, Walter Sendzik, chief executive officer of the St. Catharines-Thorold Chamber of Commerce, recently told the Standard.

While there is buzz about the economic benefits and potential flood of tourists to the region, Langlois said the band is focused on making sure everyone has a good time.

“In a live show the message is, enjoy yourself. Be nice to your neighbour,” he said. “Certainly on a sunny day on Canada Day weekend even more so. It’s a celebration of music and live music.”

That mentality is what has led to the band’s longevity, said Langlois. The Tragically Hip formed in Kingston in 1983 — Langlois joined in ‘86 — and has released 14 albums.

Last month, after a sometimes heated debate, Kingston’s city council voted to rename a portion of downtown Barrack St. as Tragically Hip Way.

“We still have fun together and really like each other. It’s probably a bit unnatural for the same five guys to be together, and we still work at it,” he said, adding the band has stayed on the same page as far as the intensity of their schedule and the venues they play. “Everyone wants to stay happy. We felt this way even when we started. No one knew who we were and we owed money. I think it’s our biggest achievement that we’re friends and we can hang out 12 hours a day and still have laughs like any old buddies would.”

Langlois is currently in Toronto with the band working on their forthcoming album with Juno-award winning producer Gavin Brown (Three Days Grace, Billy Talent). It’s the first time in several years the band is recording somewhere other than their own studio in Bath, just outside of Kingston.

And they’ve given themselves two weeks to record the album’s 13 tracks.

“The key is knowing the songs,” said Langlois.

So far, the project marks a slight departure from the band’s past recordings. Recent albums were “fully realized” in the studio with “chorusy” backups bordering on choral, he added. “This is going to be more bare bones, a little more raw, a little simpler.”

The recording style is also changing. It isn’t unusual for a band to build recorded songs one track, one instrument at a time.

And at first, the Tragically Hip considered doing that for their current recording. But as the band wrote and rehearsed, “the more it became clear we’re better when we’re all playing together at the same time,” he said.

“It seems like we’ve gotten into playing at the same time which isn’t a crazy new idea, playing as a band and trying to lay the track down all five of us together,” he said. “It’s been a process to get to this point.”

Langlois hopes the album will be released in September.

It's good to hear they are going to do it more live-off-the-floor. At least they're only spending 2 weeks on the recording; hopefully it won't be too long before it's released.d
