I know logistically this probably isn't possible, but I think it would be cool if they changed all of their streets in the downtown core (or a specific part of town) to Hip song names, band member names, or both.

Haha judging by the controversy that erupted from just wanting to rename Barrack Street, renaming every street would cause an uprising. It was interesting, The Whig Standard was live tweeting the public meeting about this on Wednesday night and there were some pretty hilarious pros and cons brought up. The general manager of the K-Rock Centre said the newly named street could be like "Kingston's Abby Road." Apparently the majority of people who attended were in favour of it, the main opposition raised being that Barrack is a tribute to Kingston's military heritage.

I wonder how Don Cherry would feel about it..being a strong supporter of the Military, yet, a big fan of the Hip (changing Barrack Street).

I think a small hip museum would be incredible. Just think of all the exhibits regarding the references. Add in memorabilia and rare items, and you have a Hip Mecca. I'd make the trip...

They cant have a damn museum when they have not gotten a damn book out yet. I WANT A BOOK. I have this entire library of rock and roll books by everybody im interested in and nothing Hip on it other than a few magazines. Come on lets have a real good juicy book like PJ20 book. Something PLEASE.

I couldn't agree more! Someone needs to put the Hips story in print!!! I know we are all wanting a dvd/rock-doc but a tell-all book would be great! The Tragically Hip are a very interesting and solid story. Yes, they are not well known outside of Canada but the band IS a part of Canadian musical history, they deserve (as do us fans and all folks with a musical thrist) a good in-depth book.
Rush, BNL, Neil Young and many other Canadian artists have told their stories......
Ok, I'm taking the rest of the year off to do interviews and research. Book will be out in 2013... I WISH!
ps.... and I don't mean a book with creepy details about how many wives and kids they have...etc. Just want to hear about their musical journey and their love for all things Canadian....etc!

I think a colourful wall mural would be fantastic. I love the Hip artwork - experiencing it on a larger scale, and having it outdoors for everyone to enjoy would be beautiful. The artwork chosen could either be something familiar, or something new and surprising.

Yea, I want a book, mabey they should write a book about life on the road, and growing up with family and the band. I dont need to know all the little details about the bands family life but hey, come to think of it I have no clue who is married and who is not, how many kids any of them have, has anybody been married more than once? I mean there is a lot of stuff thats just kind of interesting. And how about crazy stories from the road, why not! They have to of had some crazy times. And they must have had some awsome times touring different places around the world plus they all must have some personal photos to share with us. I mean not photos of children being born kind of photos but mabey "hey here is me in grade 4 with my first buzz cut" or "here is me in grade 8 with long hair down to my ass" Plus like all books mabey they can start with backround on the band members like , hmmm "Gords family goes back in relation to the king of spain" or something like that stuff, just interesting stuff that us fans would find interesting. As it stands right now, I have absolutly no clue who is married and who is not, who has kids and who does not and how many, noth that it matters but sometimes what people think is nothing actually is shocking to some.
So get a book done and do it right, a nice big 500 page hardcover book with photos going back to childhood.
They might think that nobody is interested but I bet it would instantly go to the best sellers list.

On a Cold Road happens to be an excellent piece of Canadiana! Read it for the first time a few years ago, and then again this past December. The book is one of the finalists for CBC's Canada Reads awards debate which will take place in February. There was a very good interview with Bidini on CBC last week where he was asked if his book stood up to Ken Dryden's "The Game" and his answer was something like ... "On a Cold Road is about rock'n roll and hockey, Ken's book is only about hockey, so mine wins!".

How about a music and arts festival with proceeds to charity and local (Canadian) artists called "Summer On", or something from and endless supply of amazing Hip lyrycs? Kingston has an excellent choice of outdoor and indoor venues to chosse from, and if managed and promoted properly could be an ongoing source of revenue and sustained publicity for music and arts.

On a Cold Road is indeed a fantastic read. Another good book is "Have Not Been the Same: The CanRock Renaissance". There's an entire chapter in there devoted to the Hip, and so far it's the most thorough document of their story that I've seen. But I'd love to see a Pearl Jam Twenty-style book devoted to the Hip and their 25+ years in the biz. They've probably got some great stories from over the years: the early bar-band days, playing SNL, touring with the Stones and Page & Plant, Another Roadside Attraction, Nirvana opening for them in 1990, the Hall of Fame induction, their charity work, all the great bands they've shared the stage with, etc..etc.. The Hip have seen and done some pretty cool things over the years. I'd love to hear the guys tell some of these stories in their own words.

I really like the idea of an outdoor concert, and getting charities involved might just put it to the top of Kingston's best ideas to honour the Hip list. I do think it would be best coupled with something more permanent; something that will forever be a part of Kingston.
A book is a great idea as well, I'd definitely purchase it. But it doesn't seem like a project the City of Kingston should take on. I think a book would be better off as a separate project.
