That was not what I expected, but so much better! Just Gord, Dale and Dr. P. All acoustic, just Gord and Dale sitting on chairs (Gord stood once or twice at most) and Dr. P. on an upright piano.
When they started into Depression Suite I was like, "wait...what????". I think I was shocked through the whole song! We also got Bobcaygeon, Morning Moon, and If New Orleans is Beat.
Show was not without controversy: one guy kept yelling during Trick Rider and Gord told him to "shut the f#$* up". Next thing, the two cops at the back went over to the guy and were going to try to throw him out. Gord felt bad and told them he was okay and could stay.
I wish/hope there is audio for this (or tonight's show). Once I realized what it was all about I just started using the movie mode on my camera to at least get the sound.
I asked the sound board guy for the setlist after the show but he said he needed it for tonight - same setlist. I can't wait!

yess that was very enthralling, a thrilling surprise - cant believe gord busted out some, hip tunes, 5 in total i believe, and the acoustic (dale+GD) + old school piano (Dr.P) + keyboard (dr.p+dale) renditions of his solo songs were amazing. although the night was filled with some rusty lows (a baffon was steadily yelling at gord through out the set, put the crowd, and even more so gord, on edge) and some wicked highs (steady banter, great song intros, and lots of emotion). If i knew the stage setup and scene was going to be as such, and that interesting i would of stayed the weekend!
Also i cant recall her name, but a young woman opened up the show on acoustic - 3 songs - smoking voice - great banter!

What an amazing, heartfelt, soulful and mellow performance by Gord! This was one of the most enjoyable concerts I have ever attended in a very cool setting. A small outdoor amphitheater nestled amongst a vineyard. The crowd was very laid back and mature with one exception as Thompson Girl mentioned. At 49 years of age I am normally one of the oldest concert goers at most shows I attend. Yesterday, I was the median age with an equal number of younger and older fans than me.
The amphitheater had outdoor chairs on each level which you could reserve on a first come, first served basis. The crowd consisted of well dressed wine connoisseurs who did sing along for some solo and Hip songs. The stage sort of looked like someone's living room with a few small trees in the background. Gord was seated in the middle of the stage with his legs crossed and his guitar resting on his lap, wearing his trademark straw fedora. He played extremely stripped down versions of each song in very different speeds or rythms. Gord played lead/rythm acoustic guitar. Dale Morningstar was seated to Gord's right and he played his electric guitar and mandolin. Dr. P (local boy, John Press) played an old upright piano the majority of the show. (He also had an electric organ). His back was facing the crowd and he was staring at Gord most of the time watching for musical ques.
Gord was in command! He looked very relaxed and confident as his guitar playing led every song in a strong and purposefully halting manner. I know the words to every song and I enjoy singing along with Gord. He nailed all the lyrics, but it was very difficult to sing along because of the unusual pace he chose. I found the concert so enjoyable because I didn't know if the next tune would be a solo song or a Hip one. The music was familiar, yet different.
Gord was very talkative and he told stories about some of the songs. He was very interactive with the crowd as people laughed and shouted support to some of his comments. A younger, intense fan was very intoxicated. This fan was shouting loudly at Gord between each song and Gord became slowly irritated. He made subtle comments to get the guy to quiet down to no avail. Gord said, "Keep it quiet and let the night do its work" and "Must you eat up every piece of silence". Finally, before Trick Rider started Gord said, "Please shut the f**k up!", and then he jokingly picked up his chair and pretended like he was going to throw it at the guy. This made the loud fan even more boisterous. This was when the cops showed up ready to take the guy out of the venue. Gord asked them to let him stay if he would be quiet. We didn't hear from him again.
Just before Yellow Days, a woman shouted out, "Do me Gord!" Gord replied he had to stop the show and acknowledge that comment. Dr P chimed in, "Gord, this is when you offer some of that up to your bandmates". This drew a huge laugh from everyone.
Gord sang Chancellor and Trick Rider standing up without an instrument. He sang almost accapella (?) with splashes of piano thrown in here and there. That is the way most of the songs were played. Gord led the songs with his guitar playing while Dale and Dr P fleshed out the tunes with minimalist accompaniment. The concert was mellow, but very moving. I wish I was going again tonight.

Amazing setlist! Thanks for posting! I guess Gord is making up for the greatest hits shows the Hip are playing this summer with this eclectic mix of awesomeness! Here's hoping a similar set happens at the end of August!

Gord Downie Has Them Screaming For More At Jackson-Triggs!
Rob Richardson (founder of Marquis Entertainment) describes to me the heavy–duty logistics of producing Railway Children in Toronto, transporting a huge train engine across the pond.
Tonight, his task seems easier, staging the Jackson–Triggs Twilight in the Vineyard music series in Niagara–on–the–Lake for the past 11 seasons. “I just need to get Gord on stage, and then I can sip some wine.”
Gord is Gord Downie, Canada’s foremost Tragically Hip rock musician and lyricist, who arrives at the jammed amphitheatre in a golf cart. Fans applaud loudly and scream as they do all night with, “I love you Gord!” Downie playfully interacts, suggesting, “You don’t even know me!”
What we do know is that he is a master wordsmith; in fact, his deep, resonant voice has a remarkable range, but it’s the lyrics that excite the fans, particularly women who sway and thrust arms in the air and shout, “Do me Gord!”
With one leg perched across the other’s knee, Downie taps a beat in the air and wearing a straw hat and a black vest, sips wine with a “Salut!” Everyone raises their goblets in Simon–says fashion.
He is remarkably glib, beginning “The Hard Canadian” and suddenly stopping and re–starting by suggesting, “Hey, if you start it wrong, it’s better to start over again, isn’t it? There’s no shame.” I think of Afghanistan and Iraq and other mistakes and Downie’s remarkable eloquence along with an earnest easiness and honesty about himself.
Tonight, he is backed by two capable members of the Country of Miracles on keyboards and guitar. He has dabbled in poetry, movies and TV, the poetry reflected in his songs. From “Goodnight Josephine,” “...maybe we’re born lost, born to persevere, honey I’d walk into your painting, until I’d reappeared, a speck of comet-tail dust, a blue–green northern light, flickering just, in your eyes’ deepest ravines.” From “Vancouver Divorce,” we get bare bone anguish with, “What the hell is this? You said, ‘It’s art, just fuckin’ mirror it.’ Where did we go wrong? If not here, where do we belong?” And in “Trick Rider” singing as a parent about his “wild child,” there are extra–long pauses with head held low. We wait anxiously for him to resurface, and the War Child auction tonight, of his autographed guitar, takes on heightened meaning, the money raised to assist children whose lives have been devastated by war.
Downie’s roots are humble. He is 47, born, raised and schooled in the Kingston area. With The Hip since 1983, he released 12 studio albums, two live albums, and 46 singles. They received numerous awards, including 14 Junos as well as induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The Tragically Hip once rivalled international supergroups like U2 in Canadian popularity. Like most Canadian kids, Downie, played hockey and his lyrics reflect hardcore Canadiana with references to lofty pines and black flies. When he belts out, “I left your house this morning about a quarter after nine, Coulda been the Willie Nelson, coulda been the wine, When I left your house this morning, It was a little after nine, It was in Bobcaygeon I saw the constellations, reveal themselves one star at a time,” the audience jumps up and cheers wildly.

Wow. Strange that after a couple reviews I actually have more desire to see GD than the Hip at the moment.
