Gord Straying off? - pars9393 - 07-05-2011
hey guys, there has been a couple reviews of the toronto shows that said gord wasn't really on time with the crowd and not in sync with band at times?? I was at the peterborough and toronto shows and would agree but he has been doing this for a while now going back to about 2004. Don't get me wrong, i do like some of his interpretations to old songs and i know at live shows you gotta change things up a bit, but gord must know that some of the songs he sings half his way and half the original way. Best examples I think would probably be Little Bones, Blow at High Dough, Ahead by a Century, Courage, Giftshop, 100th Meridian, Escape is at hand and New Orleans. I am just wondering if it bothers anyone else or that is what is fun for people when seeing live shows compared to albums. Until 2004, pretty much all songs were sung the same as on the album except for rants and extended jams. Maybe gord doesn't even know he is changin stuff around?

A few friends of mine noticed this at the Canada Day show and they thought he was doing this intentionally because so many people were singing along with the songs and he was singing 'around' them.
Who knows.

yes but he has been doing this for a while, if it pisses him off that everyone sings the songs is that really fair?

Sometimes I think he's just changing things up for the heck of it, other times he forgets the lyrics entirely. He totally botched 100th Meridian in Windsor, to the point where it was more or less an instrumental with mumbling.

it's so funny how he forgets the words, you wonder how he can when he has perform songs thousands of times but hey it just happens!!

Well think how many lyrics are in his head...all The Hip catalog, his solo stuff, new material he is learning and all of the songs that have never been released...I don't know how these guys do it

The last time they were in Winnipeg (when they did the 4 shows), Gord forgot the words to a song part way through (may have been Fully), so he started singing Neils Young's Cinnamon Girl but with "Synonym Girl" as the main lyric, he ranted pretty good then said "from the top of verse 2 boys" and back on que with the original song. When the song ended he said 'That's what happens when you rehearse too much"...it was classic.

Some singers use an on-stage teleprompter to feed them lyrics if they forget or screw up (Michael Stipe, Bono). Personally I enjoy it when spontaneous stuff happens during a show, so I hope he doesn't end up going the teleprompter route. I remember him totally blanking on the lyrics for "Pigeon Camera" during a show in Boston in 2002. Gord addressed those of us in the front row: "I'm gonna need some help here. I'm not fuckin' kidding. Who knows the next line?" After some help from the crowd, the song eventually got back on track. As the song ended, Gord recited a line from the song that perfectly summed up the situation: "...and after all that training. Thanks everybody." Great stuff.

I dont mind when he strays off, It makes it different. The only time it bugs me is when im singing along full speed and I feel like im the one fuckin up. Untill I notice it was him.

Happens to the best of them. I saw and interview with John Cleese once and he said the Python's were doing a live show, the Dead Parrot Sketch, he forgot the next line but the first 5 rows of the audience just yelled it out.

Yes, Gord did mess up the lyrics to 100th Meridian in Windsor. Half way through the 1st verse he jumped to a different verse. He realized his mistake immediately and started ranting about, "I'm not going to mislead you...I'm going to get you where you need to go...(then to the band) Let's start from the beginning." He continued to rant until the music returned to the the starting cords. Good recovery in my opinion.
Gord routinely changes the pace of the lyrics to change it up for himself and throw off the people who sing along with him. He also makes many mistakes...so what, I love watching him and the band.

He did this a lot in the 2007 tours. Every show I saw was killer, especially the London one. Going back and listening to the CDs years later, not as fun. He did a lot of screaming and screeching in '07 as well. 2009 seem to had seen a return to less screaming and syncopation and more true singing. Gord's is own man, and to each their own. I myself prefer the signing to time...
