Polaris Prize - 2011 - mojo_mattv - 06-18-2011

It's that time again... http://www.polarismusicprize.ca/2011/
Kind of cool to see someone like Neil Young on there (although he doesn't deserve to be short listed - or in my opinion long listed)

Re: Polaris Prize - 2011 - sean.bonner - 06-19-2011

Wolf Parade's Expo 86 is a glaring omission from the long list, imo

Re: Polaris Prize - 2011 - mojo_mattv - 06-19-2011

Was it eligible?

Re: Polaris Prize - 2011 - sean.bonner - 06-19-2011

It was released June 28th, 2010. The long list last year was released on June 17th. I believe that makes it eligible... but I'm not sure what the precise rules are.

You sir are right, have yet to hear it but if it's all I've heard it to be, then yes. A glaring omission.

Short list released...

The Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Austra - Feel it Break
Braids - Native Speaker
Destroyer - Kaputt
Galaxie - Tigre et Diesel
Hey Rosetta! - Seeds
Ron Sexsmith - Long Player Late Bloomer
Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges
Timber Timbre - Creep On Creepin' On
The Weeknd - House of Balloons

Can only claim to be familiar with two of these albums, but I'm pulling for Hey Rosetta!(!)

Re: Polaris Prize - 2011 - The Heron Outside - 07-08-2011

Braids put out a fantastic record. But knowing Polaris and their jury, they'll probably go for something strange, just because.

Seriously, look at the past winners. Fucked Up was the only winner that put out a legit record, the rest are just insincere, art-house records that lack any staying power. I bet it'll be Destroyer or Galaxie.

The aversion the Polaris jury has towards genuine rock and roll is beyond me. And I've told jurors many a time. Frustrating.

Re: Polaris Prize - 2011 - headstoner - 07-08-2011

some glaring ommisions from the long down to the short:

One Hundred Dollars – Songs Of Man, how this fantastic record didnt make the cut is criminal, check it out if you haven't. Marry me Simone!?

Frederick Squire – March 12, no web presence is the likely excuse for this not making the cut, Frederick Squire is the best song writer working in canada today.

Neil Young – Le Noise, won a grammy but far to mainstream to make the cut on a list like this, if any of the artists on the short list make a record as great as this when there 60+ years old, I'll never listen to another song in my life.

Women – Public Strain, band imploded while on tour last year, yeah you can hear chad vangaalen all over this record but then you can hear women all over the new chad vangaalen record. hmmm...

Daniel Romano – Sleep Beneath the Willow, I once told someone i would never be a fan of "country" music, well if this was the kind of country music that got air play i would have to change my mind.

Shotgun Jimmie – Transistor Sister, 30 minutes of pop-rock bliss, even you can be in a rock n roll band.

Re: Polaris Prize - 2011 - BrenTheodore - 07-14-2011

Rural Alberta Advantage's Departing has to be my favourite album of this year, and a new top band of mine. I was estactically happy (leaped out of the shower when my girlfriend yelled to me) that they were added into the Osheaga lineup.

...they should have been shortlisted IMO.

Stamp (Track 6?) was featured in a new Molson Canadian commercial this summer (talking all about Canadian summers.... you know, that one).

Re: Polaris Prize - 2011 - mojo_mattv - 07-14-2011

Departing was an awesome album. Anybody else think RAA singer sounds like Billy Corgan?

Re: Polaris Prize - 2011 - daylight - 07-14-2011

Pulling for Timber Timbre or Destroyer. Haven't listened to them all yet but the others I've heard mostly bored me. Agree that Departing should be on there too.
