If You Were The Hip...what would you play this summer?? -
spottrax - 03-21-2011
I know I am not the only one who would like to throw this subject out there for the taking but... If you were the Hip, what would your setlist(s) look like this summer? So far 2-3 shows are on the books. Obviously they are festival shows, so the Hip will probably play one rocking set (with encore) for about 2 hours. Here's a combination of what I'd like to hear (as a fan) and what they will most likely play...yes I am bored.
Love is a First
New Orleans is Sinking
Courage
ABAC
Three Pistols
38 Years Old
Wheat Kings
Morning Moon
Grace Too
Poets
Bobcaygon
Nautical Disaster
Train Overnight
Fiddlers Green
Depression Suite
Music At Work
Little Bones
encore:
Inevitabilty of Death
Escape at the Hand of the Traveling Man
Blow at High Dough
Its a Good Life if you don't Weaken
Springtime

Operating on the assumption that the setlist this time will be similar to the ottawa bluesfest setlist from 2008, which was around the same 'new album on the horizon, but not ready yet' timeframe as we are now...I wouldn't expect much. A bunch of old warhorses, 2-3 songs from we are the same, and maybe 1 nugget for the hardcore. 17-18 songs, tops. 1 encore. The end.
It's not that exciting, but I think it's about all we can hope for. I hope to be surprised (since I would put money on them playing bluesfest again this year, so I'll see them at least once), but...

There was the Guelph show for the summer fling a couple of years back, maybe my favourite setlist from them I've ever heard.

5. Lake Fever

15. Ahead By A Century
16. Grace, Too
17. Fire In The Hole
18. The Lonely End Of The Rink
19. Bobcaygeon
20. Poets

I'm requesting that the beginning of each encore be one song from the EP.

I think there will be a couple of new tunes in the sets. It's always nice to hear a rarity or two at each show. I don't think Cordelia or Silver Jet were played once during the last tour (2 set format). Some great songs that we rarely get to hear live anymore like I'll Believe In You, Trickle Down, Bring It All Back, Freak Turbulence, An Inch An Hour, Emperor Penguin and dare I say Highway Girl. I don't know if Country Day belongs on this list, but I sure enjoy that one too.

All I know is I'm still waiting on Lake Fever, I think that's somewhat realistic.

Good call Mojo. That's another one that doesn't seem to get enough Live Love. What about Let's Stay Engaged? It's got a nice rocking cadence to it that sounds great live.

I haven't heard Thugs played live since the DFN tour. That being said, I would take any songs if it meant them coming to the Rock this summer.

I've seen the Hip on every tour since that album (was a bit too young, according to my parents, to see them on the DFN tour), and heard Thugs 3 times. It's funny how things go sometimes; I've seen Thugs as often as Escape is at Hand (one of my favourite tunes), and Escape is played fairly frequently.
