Apple TV - Enlighten Me - Tthip - 01-18-2011

Should I buy it - or not?
Anyone have one?
Is it ONLY connectable via HDMI?
Is it just to view videos via netflix streaming and whatever is in iTunes?

Streaming Netflix.
Streaming whatever is in your iTunes library - music, videos, photos from iPhoto.
YouTube access.
Internet radio access.
Rent or buy directly from the iTunes store.

HDMI and Optical out.

I have the previous version AppleTV and love it. A friend has a Roku and an XBox and says that's all he needs to do basically the same thing.

ugh. netflix here in canada is the worst.

I have the new Apple TV and love it. So I cancelled cable. Main reason is Netflix. But I dig streaming music to my entertainment system and viewing my photos on the big screen. Great for renting new releases, too. Haven't stepped foot inside of Blockbuster since getting it.

I think the Canadian Netflix is great. Terrific documentary selection โ€” and that's what I dig. Throw in some Mad Men and Damages and I'm happy to hand over $8/month.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I can stream .AVI and other video files not in iTunes from my network to my iPad and watch them that way.
Can I stream .AVI files somehow to the Apple TV also?

you are in canada and you like netflix that much? there are no current tv shows (no prime time anyway) and i find the movie selection to be brutal. we dislike it so much, we didn't even use it for the entire 1 month free trial

As far as I know: not easily. You need third-party software or you have to crack the box open and hack on it yourself.

if you have an xbox or ps3 you can stream all your media from your pc to your console for free with TVersity.

Re: Apple TV - Enlighten Me - srb - 01-24-2011

I've been using the WDTV line of media players for the past 1.5 years, and love it. Plays most audio & video files (that I have anyway) from any external usb hard-drive or from a shared folder on your network.

I wouldn't say it's the best for music, but it streams Flacs natively over my stereo.

Also, I'm sure compared to AppleTV, the UI is pretty basic/rough.

Anyway, thought I'd throw my 2ยข in Smile

I don't really watch primetime television โ€” but I get enough entertainment out of Netflix to justify the $8!
