Sept 24th - Victoria BC - HandsInTheRiver41 - 09-25-2010

GD & the Country of Miracles played a headlining set at the Rifflandia Festival in Victoria tonight. It completely exceeded my expectations and may be one of the best concerts I've seen this year. It was of course a shorter set because of the festival, but they still played fabulous extended versions of some songs and the entire band was in a fantastic mood.

Setlist:

1 Canada Geese
2 Dance and its Disappearance
3 Moon over Glenora (extremely rocking version)
4 Vancouver Divorce (this is when stuff got heavy. During the bridge of the song the power on stage went out, all amps / lights... everything. The band kept playing acoustically, and Gord got an impromptu chant going, with one half of the crowd singing "truth and faith" and the other half "fuck control". When the power finally came back on the band hammered through the second half of the song as if nothing happened, then into an extended jam which included some beach boys' "don't worry baby" singing à la Live Between Us' NOIS.

6 Trick Rider
7 Gone
8 Improv Jam (this could almost have been a full song, included a beautiful story about crossing the Rockies)
9 Drowning Machine
10 Yellow Days
11 Christmastime in Toronto
12 Figment
(encore break)
13 The East Wind

The band was off stage exactly one minute before curfew. Had I known how fun this band is I might have tried to see them the other night in Vancouver. Oh well, hope they decide to tour again before too long!

Unfortunately, The East Wind was the only song of the evening that I thought the band had trouble playing through. I think it might have been rushed due to curfew (I saw there were at least another 2 songs on the setlist, but I didn't get a copy to see what the songs were).

The video reminded me that Daniel Lapp came out and played trumpet on Vancouver Divorce, Possessed, Figment and East Wind. I don't know if he's touring with the Country of Miracles or if he was just playing last night because he lives in Vic.

I see what you're saying after watching that video. Dave Clarke, in particular, was all over the place.

Just so you all know... That vid isn't the only video I'll be posting. I shot the whole set except for some of the breaks between songs due to battery changes or conserving power on my little camera. More video soon as I sort through everything I shot all weekend.

I was listening to what you have listed at #8 as "Improv Jam"... That was 'Who By Rote'... The song with Gord quasi rapping...

I'll eventually post my audio recording. Just have a lot on my plate right now.

Well I guess I haven't listened to Battle of the Nudes since it came out actually, you'd still think I'd recognize a song I heard in the past. Seemed way too impromptu at the time, but what do I know apparently!

Great audio quality on Trick Rider, hope to hear the full thing eventually.

Great videos, especially love rewatching Vancouver Divorce (although obviously most of the 'unplugged' part of the song isn't recorded).
