Hipbase Poll - 1st live Hip experience - srb - 09-10-2010

Curious to see which year the majority of the Hipbase first saw the Hip live.

My first was a halloween gig in 1991 at SaskPlace with the Razorbacks opening up for them. Place was pretty nuts because the Hip were late getting on stage and people were really loaded by the time they did. Excellent show from what I remember.

1992, Max Bell Centre, Calgary. I remember it well. The audience was insane and there was all kinds of crowd surfing and assorted shenanigans going on, including a big brown haze of marijuana smoke hovering above the crowd. Gord kept making jokes about it all through the show. It was extremely hot and sweaty. If you dared to maneuver your way to the front for a few songs, you'd be absolutely drenched in sweat when you made your way back to a safe distance. I went to school the next day with bruises all over my chest and arms from being pushed up against the barrier. The band was on fire and Gord told a great story in the middle of NOIS about his job as an ER surgeon trying to remove shards of glass from somebody's eyes. "I can't operate under these conditions!" Man, he was really crazy back then. His monologues and between-song banter at the time was pretty dark, and kinda sick. It was awesome. And out of the 30-some-odd Hip shows that I've seen over the years, this was the only gig I've seen where they actually played "Bring it All Back". That was it for me. I went home after that show convinced that they were the greatest rock band on the planet.

University of Guelph Sept. 8th 1988. I will always remember thinking I had just witnessed something special that night and have been a fan ever since. I still have the review from the Ontarion somewhere.

The winter Phantom Power tour of 1999, at Harbour Station in Saint John. I can't remember everything about the show, but I remember that I came out of it pretty satisfied. By Divine Right opened and I'm pretty sure that they came out in pajamas.

In 2000 at the Bolton Valley ski resort in Vermont. Went with a couple of friends and stayed with a friend that was going to school in Burlington at the time. Highlight of the show was Tiger the lion and Gift Shop. The crowd was amazing and really into the show. I knew after this show i was hooked on the hip for the rest of my life. On the way back to my friends place we stopped to get something to drink. Met some people in the store that came from the show and they were more than happy to offer myself and my friends some weed. Very random moment but a good one. Big Grin

Wow, I'm really surprised. I just tipped the scales for 2004. Popular year?

Popular year? I'm not sure. I'd been a hip fan for only about two years prior, and had not even collected the back catalogue before I found myself drooling with anticipation for the release of IBE. A few months later I found myself second row in my first Hip show with something like 17 000 people behind me.

Molson Park - July 1, 1994 for me. I was 18. I remember seeing the guys from Treblecharger walking around, being so excited to see Spirit of the West, and watching poor Daniel Lanois having to deal with the idiots throwing water bottles at him.

That was a great line up that day:
Quote:Treble Charger, The Mahones, Eric's Trip, Change of Heart, The Rheostatics, Jane Siberry, The Odds, Spirit of the West, Daniel Lanois, The Tragically Hip
