Arcade Fire- The Suburbs - direwolf74 - 08-04-2010
Picked this up last night and it's very, very good. It's a sprawling 16-track monster, and I've only listened to it twice all the way through so far. I need a few more spins to fully absorb it, but this album might give The Grand Bounce a run for it's money for best album of the year. When a young band becomes critical darlings right out of the gate with their first album, the pressure to justify the hype must be absolutely huge. And I give these guys credit for continuing to make such excellent music and for evolving at their own pace despite that pressure. And I love that they've helped to make Canadian music the coolest thing in the world. I predict this band will be around for a long time.

Arcade Fire's new album's generating tons of excitement, but we're more stoked about their collaborations with genre film's leading lights. Spike Jonze is directing their science fiction short film, and Terry Gilliam's directing the webcast of their August 5 concert.
Arcade Fire's Win Butler describes the Spike Jonze project in an interview with Pitchfork:
It's not a video. It's a short film; we're still working on it. It's like a science-fiction B-movie companion piece for the record.
Basically, we played Spike some music from the album and the first images that came to his mind had the same feeling as this idea for a science fiction film I had when I was younger. My brother and I and Spike wrote it together, which was really fun— it was like total amateur hour.
We shot it in Austin and a lot of kids are in the film, and it was great just hanging out with these 15-year-olds for a week and writing down all the funny things they said. It was cool to revert to being a 15-year-old for a little while.
So... kids and aliens and the music of Arcade Fire Presents The Suburbs? Sounds like fun.
As for the Terry Gilliam thing, he's directing the live webcast of their August 5 show at Madison Square Garden, which will be streamed on Youtube starting at 10 PM EST. [Pitchfork]

I just picked up the album as well and agree its a fantasic follow through effort. It's also quite amzing how good this band is live, and we're very much looking forward to seeing them at Toronto Olympic Island on August 14th. If you get a chance to download their performances from Glastonbury and\or Coachella its well worth it!

I've always been a huge AF fan but this album just solidifies it for me. FANTASTIC album! It's been on constant repeat since it's release date earlier this week. Between "The Suburbs" and Gord's new album, this summer has been great for Canadian music!

I was obsessed with the Arcade Fire for a short period of time back in 2004-2005 but I wore them out pretty fast and never really got into their second album. Five years later though, and I'm right back into them and digging this new album.

They kicked serious ass last night at Toronto Island, fantastic show. This band is definitely going places! Great to see the Sadies as well. Material from The Suburbs and Neon Bible was good but it seemed to pale in comparison to the power gems from Funeral. I have to say this venue is one of the worst possible places to attend a concert. The grounds and vistas are quite spectacular but getting there and back to the mainland is a logistics nightmare. After 2 Virgin Fests you would think they would have figured out how to move 20K+ people back and forth a little more efficiently. One hour on to get on the ferry there and 2+ hours to get on the ferry going back. You are not allowed to bring food, chairs, or anything else you might want for a day long event. They need to extend the ferry service, offer water taxies, allow bikes to move around the island, etc. Will not go back there, unless of course the Hip mistakenly decide to play there.
