OK, so it's not strictly a road trip, more 15 hours by plane... But you get the idea..

I have been asked to head out from the UK to Trinidad to teach whale and dolphin rescue, and I am after a bit of advice from the more travel hardened out there among you..

I am planning on taking the rucksack (can't say that word without thinking about 'Trading Places') and was wondering what peoples views were on the wire mesh security systems, and if they are worth a jot when throwing your pack into the hold of a plane?
Also, as I will no doubt end up falling into the water somewhere while staring out a manatee, can anyone suggest a good waterproof pouch I can put my phone/wallet into that I can also strap to my waist for security?

I have seen a couple advertised on the net, but there are people on here who's opinions on this I trust more.
