Sexsmith, Metallica producer team up

Ron Sexsmith’s next album could be some kind of monster.
For his forthcoming disc Long Player Late Bloomer, the Canadian pop troubadour has teamed with an unlikely partner: Metallica producer Bob Rock.
“I just wanted someone who could help me make a record that people would actually hear for a change,” cracks Sexmith. “But I was amazed that he was actually interested in working with me.”
Indeed, the soft-spoken singer-songwriter and the man who helmed St. Anger make an odd musical couple. But to hear Sexsmith tell it, their pairing sounds almost inevitable.
“Everything was sort of leading me to Bob in some way. I had seen that Metallica movie Some Kind of Monster and got a good vibe about him from that. Then I met him at the Junos last year and struck up a conversation when we were standing on the curb, waiting for cars to take us to an after-party. Then, later than night, I was talking to Michael Buble and told him I had all these new songs and didn’t know who to work with, because I was sort of disappointed with how my last few records had done,” he says. “He said I should work with Bob. And I was so surprised. I just thought of Bob as a hard-rock guy.”
But after he and the famed producer had a breakfast meeting in L.A. — and discovered they shared a love of classic British pop and rock from The Kinks to David Bowie to Deep Purple — they decided to give it a shot. With Rock working the boards and some top-flight musicians behind him, Sexsmith has spent the past year recording sporadically in L.A., Toronto and Vancouver.
“It’s incredible to hear it coming through the speakers,” he says. “I don’t sound like a fish out of water or anything, but it’s definitely a little more polished than my other albums. Usually, I’m dealing with a low-budget situation where you’re trying to make it sound as good as you can. But with Bob, I’m in good hands.”
With just two songs left to mix, the critically acclaimed artist hopes he may have finally made the album that will stand as his long-overdue commercial breakthrough.
“It’s not about fame or anything; it’s just that I’ve put a lot of work into these songs — they’re some of the best songs I’ve ever written — and I really want people to hear them. So I’m hoping the stars have aligned this time.”

I get the impression that Bob Rock is trying really hard to branch out as a producer, working with real artists instead of the crap he was producing before. First he works back-to-back with the Hip, and now Ron Sexsmith?? What a bizarre pairing. I'm stunned.
