how many songs are in your music player? - catechism - 12-21-2009
I'm conducting a highly scientific survey to settle a dispute between a friend and I. So tell me, basers, how many songs are in your itunes/music player of choice? Explanation/"results" to follow in a day or two.

Yeah, I'd imagine. This all started because the external drive where I kept all my music blew up a few months back, and I've slowly been re-importing my CDs and trying to rebuild my collection, and last night a friend informed me that normal humans have like 600 songs on their hard drives and maybe a handful of CDs they haven't ripped. I called shenanigans; hence the highly scientific poll. I can't decide if I think asking hipbase will hugely skew the results on one direction or another. I think people here probably have more music than your average person, but probably also don't have most of it on hard drives. But I could be really wrong about that, so I'm quite curious.
I've collected 50 responses so far; the average currently stands at 9,448 and has been holding steady around that point for a few hours. High at the moment is 50,000 songs; low is 169.

No I-pod. I have what I like to call my very own i-Wheels. I have an mp3 hook up in my car. Usually 3 or 4 8GB usb thumb drives at once, all full of different cds, in alpha order of course. So lets say 24GB, even though that's just starting to touch my cd/vinyl collection.
24GB, average songs is 6MB (accounting for shorter 2 minute songs and some higher quality rips), gives me 4096.
Sound ok math wise?

25920 with about 10 new CD's to rip. No boots or demos, as they are in a separate area. Also I have a bunch of collectable CD's that are not part of it as they are unopened. In short 90% of my commercially released is on my HD and 100% of "unofficial" is not part of my player

Okay, I meant to post this before I left for the holidays, but failed. The background and results are fully detailed in this blog post, but the short lazy version is that I got into a discussion about how much music the average person has digitized and listenable, so I thought I'd ask the internet.
total respondents: 56
total songs: 527,168
low answer: 0
high answer: 52,760
average song count: 9,413
median song count: 5,679
throwing out the freaks: 5,391 (this is the average of respondents who have fewer than 20,000 songs; it’s close to the median, which a math teacher informed me was the better number to use as an indicator anyway. And yes, my own results get thrown out.)
<10,000 songs: 43 people
10-20,000 songs: 5 people
>20,000 songs: 8 people
Caveats: Small sample size, obviously. Some people answered with the size of their collection, and so I divided it by 6 megs to get a song count that is probably wrong. Many people estimated their answers. Many people told me that they have a lot of stuff that isn’t ripped; a few have literal rooms full of vinyl that has never been digitized. I got answers about ipod vs hard drive; work vs home; hard drive vs music server. In those cases, I used the highest number. Some people gave range estimates; I took the middle number in that case. Sometimes I just sort of guessed. It's highly scientific.
