Dear Bob Rock- An open letter - etbkarate - 12-08-2009

Hey Bob Rock,

As a long time Hip fan here in the good old USA, I feel the responcibilty of USA Hip fans to tell you to please go find another band to screw up and commercialize. Before you showed up the Hip put out music such as Day for Night, Henhouse, Fully Completely,etc. and now with you at the helm we get World Container and We are the same, with songs like "In View "and "Pretend" What is that? Whatever happened to epics like an inch an hour or pidgeon camera?
If I want pop music I'll listen to REM or U2. The Hip had a sound, and identifiable wall of resonance draped with PERFECT guitar weaving and base lines. Now we have "Honey, Please".

Can I ask you a question? Can you leave the Hip alone?

Stick to Metalica. I miss the old/real hip style.

Wooo, this is gonna stir up some responses.

I have to say, I am not a Bob Rock fan (his discography is appalling), but I do think The Hip sound great on the two records he's worked on, with We Are The Same having become a fav. While I to think Day For Night is the best record, any great band needs to evolve and play with new sounds. The last two have done this style and grace (particularly We Are The Same) and both have shown great artistic courage (though if my name was Courage, I'd be on time... sorry).

I can't think of many other bands this late in their career that would both take on the challenge and succeed so amazingly with something as ambitious as say, The Depression Suite. U2 and REM (I'm sad to say) seem to be phoning in some recent records, but not The Hip. If Bob Rock had something to do with that sound and the scale of that ambition, then I salute him in spite of his seriously dodgy producing history.

First of all, I didnt know Bob Rock was a Hipbase member. I mean he must be for you to address your post to him right?
But if he isnt, you basically joined a Hip fan club website so you can air your disappointment in the band. I wouldnt expect much sympathy here, however you are entitled to your opinion.
Maybe youd be happy if the Hip produced Day for Night 2, followed by Day for Night 3?
So you go ahead and carry your Journey and Bon Jovi cassetts and play them in the tape deck of your IROC, because it's obvious youre not able nor willing to evolve youre listening abilities along with the masses, and the HIP.

2 things - Unless I'm mistaken Bob Rock does not write the Hip's songs. Secondly - If the band didn't like what he did I highly doubt they would put it out or work with him.

If it was announced that you will be producing the next Hip album, I would be open to the idea of a T. Hip/Bob Rock trilogy.

I agree with ed. One thing I always enjoyed about the hip was their "raw" sound. In Between Evolution is their last album I could listen to beginning to end. The last two albums were good but too clean and polished for me personally. To each his own.

Sorry for the typos, I was typing fast and that’s never a good thing for me. 1) A producer has a major role in the final product, to say the least. Some bands can not record without their chosen producer. No, he doesn’t write the songs, but he sure the heck does influence the way they are played and recorded. 2) I am not looking for Day for Night II and/or III, or for them to remain stagnant. What I am suggesting, is that since Rock produced them, they have turned in another direction. Anyone can see that, even Mark in NB, Canada, although he may not have the courage to agree. As far as my IROC, Journey and Bon Jovi, guess again. Not my style, I am more of a traditionalist (1969 428 Cobra Jet and maybe a little King Crimson, Marillion, Genesis, Porcupine Tree, or Zeppelin on my CD player). that is what drove me to the Hip in 1995. Their energy and ability to push the envelope and of curse their live shows. If you don’t agree that is fine, I just think that a lot of us Hip fans are falling into the old “Emperors new clothes” syndrome, whereas no matter what they put out, it is the best, and that is simply no longer the case. In my opinion, the last 2 releases are more Journey and Bon Jovi than anything they have ever done. It is dated music, not timeless. I mentioned DFN because I feel that music is timeless. At lease be honest, here guys. Go ahead get mad at me, fine, but in my opinion, they have a taken a step backwards since Mr. Rock put his hands in their creativity and the art has suffered, and I wish he’d just leave them alone and let them do there thing. Now, let me get back to work and throw on Trouble at the Henhouse!! HAHA

So, how do you feel about the songs from WC and WATS in a live setting where the songs are on a level playing field, production wise, and 'New Orleans is Sinking' has a similar sound (ie: no polish) as 'Morning Moon'? Is it just Bob Rock's production which you have issue with, or is it the songs themselves?

But what the hell, I'll wade in once again just for shits and giggles. For a band to be great, they must continue to evolve and try new things over the course of a long career. If the band had just churned out 12 albums of no frills fist-pumping bar rock, I would've lost interest a long time ago. Part of what keeps me interested in the Hip is the fact that every one of their records has thrown us a curveball or two (or three), and every album has it's own distinct personality and sound. From all indications, the boys really enjoy working with Bob Rock, and I think they've released two very good albums with him as producer. Sure, I'm not always a fan of the "Bob Rock sheen" that adorns some of these songs, particularly the bloated production on songs like "World Container" and "Now the Struggle Has a Name". But the songs themselves are excellent. Like many people have already stated here, Bob Rock doesn't write the songs. The Hip do. "The Depression Suite" is hands down one of the greatest things they've ever done in my opinion, and I hope it becomes a mainstay in the setlist for years to come.

That being said, I love it when the Hip change things up. So I'm hoping they go with a different producer for the next album. I wonder if Brendan O'Brien has any free time next year?

It is time for Bob to move on, but having followed the Hip from the beginning, I think World Container is one of the Hip's best albums, despite/inspite of/because of Bob.
