Changing Favorite Albums -
mrsardo - 11-10-2009
Listening to We are the Same (and its live incarnations) these however many months has made me (and I assume others) rethink past Hip albums and how they rate... so i'm compelled to say:
1. Music at Work
2. We Are the Same
3. Trouble at the Henhouse
4. Fully, Completely
5. In Violet Light
... and the rest are kinda tied for 6th.

Up to Here has always been my favorite album and always will be, but WATS has made me re-think things, and since im a sucker for a list thread...
1. Up to Here
2. Fully Completely
3. We Are The Same
4. World Container
5. In Violet Light
----------------------------------------
The gap between UTH and FC is so slim, its like picking which of your kids you like most. Same for WATS/WC not easy, but I am loving the "new" Hip, I didnt think I would but I listen to WC and WATS a ton, the play counts dont lie.
So much great stuff, hard to make lists like this but I enjoy the challenge, plus Im on a booby high right now, so anythings possible.....

Yeah it really does get harder and harder.
I can't do it. I definitely have a new appreciation though recently for M@W.
According to my ipod, I am obsessed with Toronto #4, Putting Down, If New Orleans is Beat, Opiated, Luv (sic) and Emperor Penguin. :music

TATH is still tops for me.

Day For Night has always been my favourite.
I think Phantom Power recently edged it out.
But these two always duke it out for top spot.

Cream of the Crop
1.) Day For Night
2.) Up To Here
3.) Fully Completely
4.) Phantom Power
Great Albums
5.) Road Apples
6.) Music At Work
**Huge Drop-off**
Middle of the road
7.) Trouble At The Henhouse
**Drop-off**
Below Average
8.) World Container
9.) In Between Evolution
10.) We Are The Same
**Drop-off**
Poor
11.) In Violet Light
12.) Self Titled
1, 2, 3, and 4 flip a bunch. RA and MAW are right below that for me. 7-10 have are nothing special to me although theres a few songs I really like, most of them on TATH. 11-12 could have never existed and I'd be fine with it.

It's funny seeing how one's own ranking of Hip albums can change so much over time. Different ones can crop out of nowhere and take you by surprise, even ones you've listened to a hundred times before, which is what happened to me with MM@W earlier this year. I guess that's a problem when you have a band who has been consistently releasing amazing music for 20 years and I am not that much older myself.
And if we're going to play the ranking game, I might as well give it a go:
1 Fully Completely
2 Road Apples
3 In Violet Light
4 Phantom Power
5 Trouble at the Henhouse
It's amazing that I can't even fit Day For Night or My Music at Work into the top 5 when I consider two more of their greatest albums.

Hmm, I've always considered Up to Here one of their weaker albums (not WC or IBE weak, but still sub par).
I think of it more as a collection of great songs (like an early 'best of' album), instead of a great cohesive album like the run from Road Apples to IVL.
But of course, Up to Here is still one of the best albums of the 80s so it's all a matter of perspective.

WC and IBE weak? Well for a good life, i guess i'll just "have to weaken" and say i think these two deserve at least Average status (or at least a justification for their supposed weakness)

I don't get all the In Violet Light love goin on here. I think it's a very weak album with very few enjoyable songs. I remember seeing an interview with Rob Baker posted on here which he said he thought that was by far their worst effort. He didn't even pick a favorite song off the album like he did with the rest.

Same here. Nothing they've done recently is likely to change that.

Well, I guess you're probably right about WC and IBE simply being average. 'Weaker than the rest of their catalog' is probably the best way to put it. They're the only two Hip albums I don't find myself listening to except for select tracks (Vaccination Scar, Gus, and Josephine from IBE; LEotR, Drop-Off, Family Band, and Yer Not the Ocean from WC).

The band's opinion of the album doesn't change by my appreciation for it at all. It's a very dark album (I think the two songs with 'dark' in the title give that away :p) and you can almost feel the tension in the band when you listen to it. It's an interesting change from the rest of their usually light-hearted albums. With the exception of the opening song, there is great consistency throughout and beautiful flow from each song to the next.
I'd consider these three to be top tier songs:
Darkest One
Dire Wolf
Dark Canuck
And others (IaGLIYDW, Use It Up, Throwing Off Glass, Beautiful Thing, and one of the most underrated Hip songs: Leave) to be some of the bands most sublime work.
